The Black Crowes - Warpaint Live

Review By Emily Costantino

The Black Crowes are one of those bands you forget about until they do something to remind you of how awesome they are - like releasing the solid rock album Warpaint after a five-year hiatus . This time around, The Black Crowes have brought us Warpaint Live to remind us that not only do they rock in the studio, but they put on a damn good live performance too.

Warpaint Live captures the spirit of a good old-fashioned rock n' roll concert. The buzzing energy of the crowd comes through the speakers loud and clear, and the band is so together it sounds completely effortless. The first disc, which matches Warpaint's track listing, opens with the incredibly energetic "Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution," and gives the listener an accurate view of how the rest of the album will go. "Walk Believer Walk" shows off the band's southern side, with Chris Robinson belting those lyrics in his distinctive voice. Other favorites include "Locust Street," which has a lovely melody and soulful lyrics ("Can't you hear the sunrise cryin'?"), and "Movin' On Down The Line," complete with a harmonica and the help of vocalists Charity White and Mona Lisa Young. The album gets precariously close to Christian rock on "God's Got It" - which Robinson describes as a "song with a message." Okay, we'll forgive you.

Disc 2 features six new songs (including a few covers) recorded for the live album. "Poor Elijah/Tribute to Johnson" feels very gospel-y with its chorus of backing vocals, and the next couple tracks show The Black Crowes's bluesy side. The album brings back the rock n' roll with Eric Clapton's "Don't Know Why" and Rolling Stones cover "Torn and Frayed" - served with a heavy dose of Southern rock influence.

Like most Black Crowes albums, Warpaint Live might not stick in your head for very long, but it's still a fun listen. And you'll definitely feel like you're there - and then you'll wonder why you actually weren't.
