In Spring, 2009 - Starz Declares - "We
Are 'Sparticus!'The world of gladiators comes to life as the Roman
Empire's most brutal fighters clash in the ultimate arena. Starz's
new series, "Spartacus," is an entirely new twist on
the ancient legend, with a unique graphic novel look and style,
along with a fresh narrative approach. Debuting exclusively on
Starz, "Spartacus" will be produced by Starz Media with
Executive Producers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Joshua Donen.
It will begin production in early 2009, debuting
on Starz and its suite of channels later in the year. "When
'Spartacus' debuts in the summer of 2009, it will give our subscribers
a show unlike anything currently on TV: a fresh, high-energy action
series with nothing held back," Starz PV Stephan Shelanski
said. "We think it will be the destination show for next
summer. It, along with our other original productions underscores
our commitment to being a new kind of TV company, programming
the biggest movies and the best new television series."
Starz's new "Spartacus" series was inspired
by the actual slave of the Roman Republic who in 73 BC led a slave
revolt that grew to more than 120,000 fighters. Defying the Roman
Republic's legions of soldiers, they campaigned for two years
through much of what is now Italy before succumbing to a much
larger army. The new series will tell a new set of stories rich
in character, action, sex and combat.
Greener
Mountains is the coming of age story of JP Barton, an adopted
boy raised on a throwback Vermont family resort. Since being found
as an infant by the mercurial aging owner, JP has essentially
never left the resort grounds. But with the arrival of a young,
free spirited New York artist, Alice Flynn, his sheltered life
is suddenly turned upside down. Her arrival, in addition to a
convergence of events, propels JP on a bumpy ride of self-discovery.
It's not until JP accepts who he is, that he realizes what's most
important to him. Greener Mountains is a story of finding out
where you belong in the world and discovering that who you are
is often more than enough.
The film also stars M. Emmet Walsh (My Best Friend's
Wedding, A Time to Kill), Brad Raider (That Was Then, The Trouble
With Normal), Kevin Durand (3:10 to Yuma, Smokin' Aces), Curtis
Armstrong (Revenge of the Nerds, Better Off Dead), Nan Martin
(Shallow Hal, The Drew Carey Show), Phill Lewis (The Suite Life
of Zack and Cody, Kicking and Screaming) and Michael Hitchcock
(A Mighty Wind, Best in Show).

Inspired by the Academy Award®-winning Best Motion Picture
of 2006, Crash is a provocative new 13-episode drama starring
an ensemble cast led by film icon Dennis Hopper. Set in LA, the
series explores the complexities of social and racial tolerance
and the meaning of the American dream through characters whose lives
intersect and collide as they strive to achieve that dream.
More "Crash" casting news!
Veteran actor D.B. Sweeney ("Jericho," Eight
Men Out, The Cutting Edge), Nick Tarabay ("The Sopranos,"
"CSI: Miami") and Michael Fairman (recurring roles on "LA
Law" and "Hill Street Blues") have joined the ensemble
cast of "Crash," the first original drama series from Starz
Entertainment, co-produced with Lionsgate and based on the Academy
Award®-winning Best Picture.
Sweeney, soon to appear in director Spike Lee's upcoming war drama
Miracle at St. Anna, plays Peter Emory, a successful pre-bust real
estate developer, living in Brentwood with Christine (Clare Carey),
his frustrated wife, and their teenage daughter. Fairman is Lou
Loskey, Christine's overbearing father who, because of illness,
can't care for himself anymore. Tarabay portrays Axel Finet, a police
lieutenant having an affair with fellow officer Bebe (Arlene Tur).
The actors join the recently announced ensemble cast headed by Dennis
Hopper.
Set in Los Angeles, the series will explore the complexities of
social tolerance in contemporary America by digging into the meaning
of what it takes to reach the American dream. Characters will intertwine
and crash into each other, coming face to face with the daily hurdles
and obstacles that threaten to get in the way of achieving that
dream.

Starz
Inside: Comic Books Unbound
A Starz Originals' look at the evolution and revolution of Hollywood's
adaptations of famous and
infamous comic book characters and storylines.
Part of Starz Inside, a series of original specials
from Starz Entertainment hosted by film critic Richard Roeper.
From superheroes to superstars, Hollywood turns to comic books
for imagination and inspiration, snatching bigger-than-life characters
off the page and throwing them onto the big screen. In recent years,
comic books have become the single biggest force in Hollywood where
A-listers and Oscar®-winners commonly don capes and cowls to
star in comic book fare. Some of Hollywood's biggest blockbuster
successes, such as the Spider-Man, Superman and Batman movies, X-Men
and the upcoming Iron Man, have been ripped from the pages and adapted
from visually and emotionally stimulating comics and graphic novels.
Starz Inside: Comic Books Unbound looks at the evolution and revolutions
in this colorful corner of entertainment, bringing to life comic
books and characters to the big screen. Films and comics explored
include the Spider-Man, Superman and Batman movies, American Splendor,
Fantastic Four, X-Men and Sin City. Also included are less-obvious
graphic novel adaptations such as Road to Perdition, Persepolis,
300 and A History of Violence, as well as new releases such as The
Dark Night, Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Iron Man.
Featured in the special are Stan Lee, former president and chairman
of Marvel Comics; Actress
Selma Blair (Hellboy); Director Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy); Writer
Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk, X-Men 2); American Comic Book Artist
Paul Pope (Hellblazer, The Batman Chronicles); Actor Ron Perlman
(Hellboy); Director Richard Donner (Superman); Director Robert Pulcini
(American Splendor); Shari Springer-Berman, writer (American Splendor);
Executive Producer
Michael Uslan (Batman); Roger Corman, producer (Fantastic Four);
Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios; and Mike Richardson, founder
of Dark Horse Comics, along with many others.
Starz
Inside: The Pixar Story
Starz takes a dive deep into the story of Pixar with their latest
Starz Inside. In the mid 1980s, three magnificent visionaries came
together to take one of the most revolutionary steps in animated movie
development. With their gifts of art, science, and business the three
men created a whole new way to watch animation, in 3-D film.
The story begins the relations with The Walt Disney organization,
introduces you to the three men John Lasseter, Steve Jobs, and Ed
Catmull, and finishes up the company as we know it today.
I have always been a huge fan of animated films, when I was young
I loved to watch Toy Story and even now Monsters Inc. and Finding
Nemo are two of my favorite movies. Starz has brought to my attention
the brilliance behind these movies, something of which I never quite
understood. But to hear the genius behind these productions was
amazing, These men are truly gifted.
The presentation by Starz was fantastic. They touched everything
about the Pixar story and I loved every minute of it. Tune in for
never before seen footage from the Pixar Library, and interviews
with animator, studio executives, directors, producers, and the
voices behind some of our beloved characters.

Starz Reviews:
Starz Insider has outdone themselves for sure, with In the
Gutter, the inside look at gross out comedy in movies. The compilation
of all the most disgusting and disturbing scenes in movies like Amerian
Pie, Road Trip, and Animal House, was almost too much for my weak
stomach to handle, yet I couldn't stop watching and after forging
through I found it wilding entertaining and hilarious.
They bring to the viewer's attention how this type of humor did
not exist in movies before the 1960's but it didn't take long after
the Animal House, for many films to jump on the bandwagon. Limits
would be pushed and things you hoped to never see were popping up
on movie screens everywhere, and the results were outrageously hilarious.
Make sure to tune into Starz on July 29th at 10pm.

The episode provided a fantastic timeline through the history of
video games from the early Atari systems to the present day Playstation
3. It was surprising to see that Hollywood had been involved in
the video game business right from the start with franchises like
Tron and E.T. It is unfortunate that these titles bombed at the
time, but great to see that Hollywood decided not to give up on
the video game industry for good. You can see that with the emergence
of games such as Tomb Raider and Resident Evil, and the films that
followed that Hollywood and the video game industry finally began
to get back on the same page creatively.
From the episode I definitely took away the idea that video games
and Hollywood are always evolving and as each evolves with newer
and greater technology it will bring about this same evolution to
the way in which the audience can interact with a film. This is
bound to create some very unique franchises and marketing campaigns,
in which the film and the game almost become one entity. At the
end of the episode the question was posed "Will games replace
movies?" In my opinion, there is always going to be a market
for great cinema and audiences still desire the movie-going experience.
Also, not all films are marketable in game format. I feel that there
is always going to be room for both industries and each one can
compliment the other if marketed in the correct way.

international industry. Now Starz Inside; a new monthly series of

outlets have begun to option anime creating a multi-billion dollar
international industry. Now Starz Inside; a new monthly series of
original specials, hosted by film critic Richard Roeper, takes us
on a dizzy quick trip through the world of this unique phenomenon.
Starting at anime's humble manga beginnings, in Post World War
II Japan, we are quickly catapulted to the more modern assimilation
into American pop culture.
The fast-paced presentation of major Japanese events and players
of the anime industry leads to a generalized and uninformed history.
Dr. Osamu Tezuka, the creator of Astro Boy and Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder
of Studio Ghibli and the creator of Spirited Away are the only figureheads
given any sort of proper treatment.
The majority of the documentary is focused on anime's American
assimilation. A plethora of nauseating over-exposed guest speakers,
such as Hal Sparks, Michelle Rodriguez, Crispin Freeman and Rob
Zombie, are the "master historians" of this pop culture
revolution. Along with the unpolished, horribly sporadic scene changes
and extremely distracting, ever-morphing matrixesque movie frame
the documentary becomes very irritating and disorienting. The only
saving grace is the magnificent feast of well chosen anime and manga
sequences.
In the end, a decent presentation of anime's long-standing assimilation
into American pop culture is achieved. Its shallow history, random
pop icons, and plentiful cinematic sequences of blood, naked girls,
and famous anime scenes make it a perfect choice for anime virgins
and pop culture junkies who just want to get a little ahead of the
game.
