(May 2009) - PCM's writer Julie Kissane
held a phone interview with YouTube sensation and the first
artist to be signed to Justin Timberlake's record company
(Tennman Records), Esmee
Denters . The singer was discovered by Timberlake
after she recorded videos of herself covering popular songs
and posting them online.
21-year-old Denters was nice enough to call
us while she was touring in Manchester, England to talk
about her debut album, "Outta Here," which is
set for release May 22nd in Europe and her latest tour.
The Netherlands native expressed her genuine
joy of traveling and performing around the world. She's
opened for acts like Justin Timberlake, Natasha Bedingfield
and Enrique Iglesias. Oprah Winfrey invited the rising star
to appear on a special edition of her show which was dedicated
to Youtube.
Her name is becoming more
and more recognized here in the U.S.
"It's been so much fun traveling,
I've been given the chance to visit places that I would
normally never have the chance to go to and it's been amazing.
It's a little hectic sometimes because you can have early
flights and things like that. I really enjoy seeing what
people are like in all these countries and performing there,"
said Denters over the phone.
Check out some Q&A from the interview
we held with Denters to find out more about this singer.
Her album release in the U.S. is still to be announced.
But hey, we're sure you'll find plenty of videos of her
on YouTube to keep you busy!
Q: In terms of the time
you've spent in the U.S., how has that been for you?
Denters:
"Oh, I've absolutely loved it! I've been to New
York, L.A., Atlanta, Chicago, a lot of places, it's been
good!"
Q: You are definitely
labeled 'an Internet senstation,' where do you think you'd
be today without YouTube?
Denters: "The reason
I am sitting here is because of YouTube and because of all
the people that have supported me. That's how Justin found
me and I would have never been here. I don't know what I
would be doing right now without it, maybe going to school
and trying to pursue this career (laughs)."
Q: How long did it take
you to write this album? Is it two years that you've been
working on it?
Denters: "Probably
a little over two years. It wasn't like I was there everyday.
I was traveling and working with different producers and
songwriters. I had to figure out what it was that I wanted
to do. I am so excited to show people what my own music
sounds like and to get to know me."
Q:
In terms of the covers that you've recorded yourself singing
on YouTube, what made you decide to choose one song over
the other?
Denters: "I just
choose songs that I like at the moment."
Q: PCM feels
like you are a great candidate for an MTV reality show.
Would you ever think about doing something like that?
Denters: "There
had been talks about that. Right now, I think it's more
fun to just walk around myself with a camera all day and
put that stuff up myself on my Twitter or website. I want
to just show everyone my point of view instead of through
a big reality show."
Q: What was appearing
on Oprah like?
Denters: "Oh man,
it was amazing. It was something I told people when I was
little, that one day I'd appear on the Oprah show! Everyone
would laugh at me. When I heard it was scheduled, it was
surreal. I met her and she was so nice. It was crazy!"
Q: When you first heard
that Justin Timberlake was interested in you, were you cool
as a cucumber about or it completely shaking in your boots?
Be honest with us!
Denters: "No! It
was a really big deal for me. I've always looked up to him
as an artist. To know that he saw something in me and wanted
to make a record was an incredible feeling. I was so excited,
of course!
