Unless you are living under a rock we are sure you have heard
the name Kina
Grannis popping up all over the place these days.
Her viral Jelly Bean video for the song "In Your Arms"
made this year's Time Magazine list for Top 10 Creative videos,
she has performed on the Ellen Degeneres show, and has recieved
critical praise from the likes of Entertainment Weekly and even
Project Runway judge and Marie Claire fashion director Nina Garcia.
Recently Kina took a few moments to speak with Kristyn, read
the interview below!
Q: You have certainly been a busy lady these day, with the
"In Your Arms" video and all. How much of a whirlwind
has everything been for you?
Kina Grannis: It's definitely been a whirlwind. We didn't
know what to expect putting it out so I wasn't really prepared
for anything. Then from the moment it was out it kind of just
exploded, then the next day it was on Good Morning America and
then made its' way all over the web and news stations. That led
to meetings and such and I would say for the first two or two
and half weeks things were going so fast I didn't have a lot of
time to stop and think about it. It was go, go, go and try not
to freak out. Now that it has been out for a bit I have been able
to reflect, and wow, it has really been crazy and so exciting.
Q: Did I read correctly, that the video was a little over
two years in the making?
KG: It was 22 months.
Q: Do you feel now that the pressure is on you to go that
route with another video in the future?
KG: Definitely the bar has been raised. While I don't
know if it necessarily has to be a two year in the making video,
but it needs to be special and that is something that has always
been important to me with music videos that I want to use them
as an excuse to do something really artistic and creative. It's
definitely something I have always been conscious of and wanted
to do, but it's a little scary after doing something like this
one. Everyone is saying 'we can't wait to see what's next' and
I'm like 'don't get your hopes up'...(laughs)
Q: I think it is funny that sometimes we can never tell what
is going to be viral and explode like in the case of the "In
Your Arms" video.
KG: Exactly.
Q: You were recently on the Ellen Degeneres show. How was
that experience?
KG: That was pretty surreal. It was a great experience.
I was very nervous going in to it, thinking 'Oh, my gosh..what
if I trip or cry?' but everyone on the show was super nice and
super welcoming and Ellen of course was amazing and genunine.
It was just a really fun experience and it was over before I knew
it. I was like 'wow, was I really just on Ellen?'
Q: Do you have any upcoming touring plans? What is next on
the horizon for you after the holidays?
KG: Hopefully I will be doing a bit of writing in January
and in February I am going back to Europe for a tour there and
after that will be Australia and Asia. I am hoping in the spring
to come back and do a U.S. run and then eventually get back to
writing and getting to my next album.
Q: That's awesome! Are you are person that can do a lot of
writing while out on the road?
KG: For me, I have never written a song on the road. Sometimes
I wish I was that person, but for me writing happens when I am
sitting there with my guitar kind of relaxed and on the road I
only have my guitar when I am on stage. So, if I'm not holding
it, not going to happen (laughs). I have been trying when I am
home to really make time for it.
Q: What can you share with our site audience about the "Stairwells"
album that we might not be aware of?
KG: With it being my first real, legitimate album it was
a very important thing for me, I had done a few CD's in college
but they were kind of experimental with my early songs so going
into it I was looking a life with ideas of how to be a better
person figuring out my life. Bottom line it was 'How do I be better?'
and that is what a lot of it is about and I actually named it
"Stairwells" because in college I was super shy and
I was afraid I would annoy people if I was singing and playing
all the time so I would kind of retreat to the stairwells in the
dorms or apartment building and sing there for hours. That is
where I did most of my writing and it was kind of like my safe
place. So, when I was making the album and I was trying to name
it, it kind of popped into my head that it would be nice to pay
tribute to those stairwells.
Q: That is such a great story. Back to the "In Your Arms"
video for a minute..did Jelly Belly jump on board with the concept
right away.
KG: They were very helpful. The director Greg Jardin had
the idea and we talked about it for awhile, but the budget was
very small coming out of my pocket, so I was like 'I'm not going
to give us all the money because I don't have alot' so we had
a budget to work with and we saw it might not be possible to do
it, so we ended up reaching out to Jelly Belly and saying we want
to make this music video, here are the plans and the animation,
can you help us out? Luckily they donated all of the beans. That
was really amazing.
Q: Wow! How much snacking went on in-between takes?
KG: I controlled myself for the first year and then after
that it was just way too many being eaten. The good thing was
that you really couldn't eat the beans we were using because they
had been handled over and over again and were dirty so that just
wouldn't have been a good idea. Jelly Belly would occasionally
send us little samples of flavors like chocolate covered jelly
beans and stuff like that so there was always something to be
snacking on!
Q: That's awesome! Do you have a favorite flavor?
KG: I really like Chocolate Pudding, Pina Colada, Green
Apple, and Cotton Candy.
If you haven't had a chance to check out the video that everyone
is talking about you can watch it below:
It only took 1 still camera + 1 Kina Grannis + 22
months + 2,460 frames + 288,000 jelly beans to create the video.
