Interview with Griffin House

(March 2009)- Two years ago, one of our writers saw Griffin House open for singer Matt Nathanson in Philadelphia. He carried himself just as good as a mega show headliner and we remembered his name.

Now, here he is, Griffin House, with a brand new CD with positive acclaim from fans and media alike. Griffin is a very emotional and candid songwriter. With a degree in poetry, he sure knows his stuff! This guy creates great music along with relentlessly touring the U.S. Check out his MySpace page to find when Griffin will be in a city near you, we're sure he probably will be! How does he do it?! We caught up with Griffin and held an in-person interview with him before one of his shows. He talked to our interviewer about

Check out some Q&A from our interview with this great artist as well as listen to an audio clip from our chat!

Q: When did you first become interested in music?

Griffin: That's a good question. Well, I didn't start singing until I was accidentally cast in a musical when I was in school. 'Oklahoma.' I didn't start singing until then but I guess I've always been interested in music, always listening to records when I was little. My parents had all types of albums. I listened to The Beatles, Michael Jackson - 'Thriller' was my favorite record.

Q: Who would you list as some of your main musical influences?

Griffin: Off the top of my head - Johnny Cash, The Clash, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty.

Q: Can you talk about the writing process on your new album, "Flying Upside Down?"

Griffin: Yeah, I just wrote as much as I could. I worked for a long time in Ohio during the winter on it and then went out to California to record the album.

Q: Where do you see the future of music heading and where do you see yourself in that picture?

Griffin: I think the only people that really love to do it and can stay out on the road for a long time will be successful. Obviously, there will be exceptions to the rule but I think bands are staying alive by being out and touring. I feel good and creative about being one of the people that figure out how to survive!

Q: What's a piece of advice that you would give to aspiring musicians?

Griffin: Don't ever give up. Just keep going!
