Interview with Prima J

(May 2008) PCM's Joe spoke to the pop/R&B duo Prima J. Jessica and Janelle Martinez are two cousins that are are very down-to-earth and have a mutual passion for music! They love singing and dancing and are thrilled to be putting out a debut album. Their first single, Rock Star, was already featured on Bratz - The Major Motion Picture Movie Soundtrack.

Joe: Hello!

Jessica & Janelle (in unison): Hi!

Joe: How are you, girls? Where are you, in NY right?

J & J: Hi, yes, we're great, we're in NY!

Joe: I have to tell you something, we got the Bratz Soundtrack last year, I think. I'm a disc jockey and many times, I've played, "Rock Star," and the kids know it and love it! You've got lots of young fans!

J & J: That's great! Thank you, we love that! Our actual album came out June 17th.

Joe: Who is older?

Jessica: I am older by three months. We'll both be twenty this year.

Joe: Almost 21!

J & J: (laughs in unison) Yeah!

Joe: Well, I got to ask, what was it like to first hear your song on the radio?

J & J: Wow! Everytime we hear it, it's like the first time. It still doesn't seem real. The first station we ever heard it on was KISSFM in LA, which is our favorite station. It's the biggest station in LA and that was the first one we ever heard our song on. People were calling us saying that they heard it that we haven't heard from in years. (laughs). It's still crazy.

Joe: You are both pretty young, you may not have an answer for this, you've been singing and dancing your whole lives but did you ever have any other jobs?

J & J: OH YEAH! We definitely worked.

Janelle: My first job was at a dance studio. I worked at a sporting goods store, a clothing store, I was a valet parker at a club, I sold hair straightener's at the mall kiosk.

Jessica: I worked at a tanning salon, a clothing store, a cafe for a little bit. That's it!

Joe: Okay, wow! What kind of live work have you done?

J & J: We just performed at Wango Tango and that was so great, we didn't even know they were going to invite us to go. They threw us on the big stage and we performed in front of 20,000. A lot of people were there for The Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus so you can imagine.

Joe: Sharing the stage with those guys isn't bad!

J & J: No! Not at all!

Joe: What was it like coming out on stage and singing? Must of been fun!

J & J: Oh yea, we wanted to show everyone who we are and our love for singing and dancing. It's what we live for!

Joe: I imagine your cheerleading experiences may help?

J & J: Definitely! They are helpful to know. We've been doing it since we could walk up to when we graduated high school.

Joe: If you weren't singing now, where do you think you would be? What would you guys be doing?

Jessica: I think I would be doing something in the entertainment industry whether it'd be writing, acting, dancing. I live for entertaining people and I'd have to be doing something in this industry.

Janelle: I think I'd probably be acting. But also, maybe a school counselor. I love people.

Joe: Any kind of acting aspirations?

J & J: We want to do everything we can! Acting would be great.

Joe: I don't want to dwell on this but I know when people see your pictures they'll want to know, what are your love lives like?

J & J: (laughing) We're married to music. It's our boyfriend. We spend all of our time we music. It's so fulfilling.

Joe: So, you guys had normal high school lives, how are your friends now versus then?

J & J: Well, it's interesting. In high school, we didn't have as many friends as we do now. Ha! Suddenly now, they all want to be our best friend! It's okay, but the friends that were our closest friends in the beginning are still friends with us, so it's cool. Our family is the best, too! They are 100% supportive and are our rock and keep us grounded.

Joe: How are you guys cousins?

J & J: Our dad's are brothers.

Joe: Now, your music is very broad range. It's not directly aimed at Disney tweens.

J & J: No, I think our songs are older and people are age can relate to songs on the album. There are different sounds, it's urban pop. It's all around the board.

Joe: So now, since you're both going to be 21 soon, so we aren't going to see you in the tabloids soon, right? You guys will be good (teasing)?

J & J: No, no! Our family has been helping us with that! We don't need to do crazy things like that, we have our family. We don't need that.

Joe: Any other brothers and sisters?

Jessica: I have one brother who just turned eighteen.

Janelle: I have one brother who just turned eighteen as well and I have another sister who is twenty. She went to San Diego State University, she's working in international buisness.

Joe: You have one video out for 'Rock Star' right?

J & J: Yes, and we just finished this past weekend, the video for our next single, You're Not Alone, you should be starting to see that soon.

Joe: What's is like making a video?

J & J: It was a two day shoot and videos are so much fun. We could do them everyday, to get our make-up done and perform all day!

Joe: Anything unusual you'd like to tell our readers about that no one knows?

Janelle: I am the queen at rock-paper-scissors! I've never lost.

Jessica: Hmm.. I don't have fun facts! I'm very bad at walking in heels, it's so bad! I fall a lot. I trip!

Janelle: She has scraps all over her legs!

Joe: When you're not recording and singing, what do you guys do?

Jessica: I love movies. I go by myself all the time, I love them so much. I love The Notebook, Night At The Roxbury, there's so many, those are two I like. Anything with Will Ferrell. I love Elf! (laughs)

Janelle: I play Call of Duty 4 (laughs), I love The Office and Lost on TV. Family Guy, South Park, The Simpsons, I love shows!

Joe: Which one of you is the bigger flirt?

J & J: Definitely, Jessica!

Joe: Who is funnier?

J & J: We're both funny. Janelle, though, I guess! It depends!

Joe: I see that your family are Dallas Cowboy fans..

J & J: Our family are Dallas Cowboy football fanatics. It's huge for our family. Our goal is to perform in the stadium one day. We are huge fans. We grew up in L.A. but our parents were born in Brownsville, Texas.

Joe: How did you get discovered?

J & J: Basically, our managers got us a meeting and they loved our energy and songs. Showed them the demo and that was it. It went from there, it never happens like that ever but we were so blessed and lucky.

Joe: What kind of traveling to you want to do?

J & J: We want to go everywhere and place our impact everywhere with everybody!

Joe: Well, I wish you guys the best and thank you for your time!

J & J: Thank you, thank you, thank you!
