Interview with The Record Life

(May 2009) - PCM's Kristyn spoke to 21-year-old Jakob Johnson/ The Record Life about his debut album, Into the Sea of Something Big.

Listen to this - the CD was inspired by the genesis of a romantic relationship... the only difference is, in his case, it was with a woman who never existed. You'll find out all about this crazy story if you read our Q&A interview with Jakob below. The multi-talented singer/songwriter/guitarist/pianist told us all about how he got into music and even some personal tidbits about his life! Visit his MySpace page for more information and enjoy our interview that follows!

Q: When did you first become interested in music? Tell us about yourself..

A: "My dad was a guitar player and my mom played piano. I've always been around music and initially what got me super intrigued was watching my dad play and I always thought he was so cool. I asked him to teach me and he did. My parents have been really supportive of me every since."

Q: We know you have an EP, when can we expect a full length album?

A: "The record should be out later this year. We're really hoping - you never know. It's all finished though and the EP was to just get things started so we would have something to tour with and picked songs that I thought represented the record. We can't release the full length yet so we figured, hey, let's release four songs."

Q: Where did you draw inspiration for this album? We read something about a girl that didn't really exist. Tell us the scoop!

A: "Basically I was talking to a girl via MySpace that said she was a pro snowboarder and had a place in Los Angeles. We became good friends. I had lost my house in Hollywood and needed a place to live and conveniently enough, she had a place for me to stay before I started the record. It sounded like a great idea. What ended up happening was we would talk more and more over the next few months, be on the phone for hours and we fell for each other. The day came when I was supposed to move and she had apparently lost the place.

I was so in love. I was willing to accept anything. I lived in my car for a couple weeks. We'd talk and then all these crazy stories were being told to me and she sort of disappeared and then eventually I found out that she wasn't who she said she was at all. It was about a year before I found all that out but I got a whole record out of it!

It happened. I can't change it. I'm actually writing it all down and trying to submit it as a script for a movie. If I told you the entire thing, it would take me hours and hours!"

Q: Is there significance behind the album title, Into The Sea Of Something Big?

A: "It's definitely a metaphor for how I felt when I moved to L.A. I flew out to meet with a record label and missed my flight back and so I just stayed. This place was so unfamiliar and full of uncertainty. It can apply to so many different situations. It reminded me of a title of a cool children's story like 'Where The Wild Things Are.' It popped into my head and I knew that it had to be it!"

Q: How would you describe your sound to a first time listener?

A: "I've been asked this question a lot and what I've been telling me is that basically it's a mix of everything I grew up listening to - a mix of Oasis, The Beatles, Death Cab For Cutie, Billy Joel. It's modern and current with older influences, too. It's a classic, pop/rock theme with the record. Harmonies all over the place and hooky melodies but not too over the top. It's a tribute to everything I grew up listening to!"

Q: Just for fun question - when I say the word 'pop culture' - what's the first thing that comes to mind?

A: "Honestly, The Jonas Brothers. (laughs) That's not a bad thing, I don't think!
