Synopsis:
Bring It On: All or Nothing is a sassy and spirited production with new moves, new music and eye-popping dance sequences. Britney Allen (Hayden Panettiere) is living the dream -- the cheerleader's dream. At the elite seaside campus of Pacific Vista High School, Britney is captain of the cheerleading squad and the envy of everyone at school-including one overly-ambitious teammate. When Britney hears about a forthcoming audition for a top cheer squad to appear in recording star Rihanna's upcoming television special, she is determined that her Pirates cheer squad will capture the coveted spot. But Britney's life turns from cheer-topia to cheer-tastrophe when her father's job takes her family to Crenshaw Heights, a multi-ethnic working-class neighborhood east of Los Angeles. At her new school, Britney is viewed with suspicion by most of the students, especially by Camille (Solange Knowles Smith), the overly confident and acerbic leader of the Crenshaw Heights Warriors cheerleading squad. No one is more surprised than Camille, however, when Britney proves herself and secures a spot on the Warriors' cheer squad. Britney and her new teammates work feverishly to prepare for the audition with Rihanna, incorporating some edgy new moves into their performance. Now the pressure is on, as the Warriors find themselves locked in a high-stakes cheer-off with Pacific Vista, Britney's old school! During the climactic, no-holds-barred fight to the finish, friendships, loyalties and talents are tested-but only one team can come out on top.

Hayden Panettiere stars in Bring It On: All or Nothing as Britney, the captain of Pacific Vista High cheerleading squad. The current spokesperson for Neutrogena, Panettiere recently appeared as a competitive ice skater in the film Ice Princess and recorded the ballad "I Fly" for the film's soundtrack and closing credits. Panettiere had a lead role in the Garry Marshall-directed comedy Raising Helen, opposite Kate Hudson, and recently completed two independent films: All Fall Down for HDNet opposite Anthony LaPaglia and Isabella Rosselini, and Mr. Gibb for Kevin Spacey's company Triggerstreet, co-starring Bill Sadler and Tim Daly. Panettiere's other credits include Racing Stripes, The Affair of the Necklace, Remember The Titans, Message In A Bottle, The Object of My Affection, Dinosaurs (as the voice of "Suri") and A Bug's Life (in which she provided the voice of the character "Princess Dot"). Panettiere received a Grammy nomination for Best Spoken Word Album and a nomination for The Hollywood Reporter's Young Star Award for her recording work in A Bug's Life Read-A-Long.

Solange Knowles Smith stars as Camille, the captain of the Crenshaw Heights cheer squad, who initially regards Britney with utter disdain. Knowles Smith co-starred in Fox Searchlight's comedy film Johnson Family Vacation opposite Cedric the Entertainer, Vanessa Williams, Shannon Elizabeth and Steve Harvey. For television, she guest starred in episodes of UPN's comedy series "One on One," the animated Disney Channel series "The Proud Family" and on the CBS sitcom "Listen Up," starring Jason Alexander. Knowles Smith is an accomplished recording artist, songwriter and producer whose debut album, "Solo Star," received critical acclaim and featured collaborations with the Neptunes ("Crush") and Timbaland ("Get Together"). Previously, Knowles Smith toured the world as a key dancer with Destiny's Child, the Grammy-winning vocal act led by her older sister Beyoncé. A student of dance and theatre from an early age, she first performed in public at the age of 4, as a member of Houston children's dance troupe and made her public singing debut at age 5 at a local amusement park.

Phone Interview with LISA MYERS, head hair stylist for BRING IT ON: ALL OR NOTHING, June 28, 2006

1. What was the challenge in creating styles that were both athletic and camera ready?

I try not to create styles that cast unflattering shadows across faces. Instead I used a lot of twists, braids, and creative looks with sleek, classic lines.

2. Since Hayden Pantierre was the star of the film, did you do anything very special for her hair?

Yes, in the beginning when her character is more innocent, I used a great deal of cute, colorful little barrettes in her hair. I also blew her hair very straight, smooth and sleek to create a sort of "perfect, angelic" look; Then when her character moves to Crenshaw Heights High School, and goes into the final cheer competition, I created a very special style for her that was much more hip and relaxed: I braided in cornrows- on one hand to be practical and keep the hair out of her face because of the athletic scenes-but also because it is a strong look to go with a strong change in the character. I braided eight cornrows over her whole head- and left the back straight in a high ponytail.

3. Any special needs or challenges doing African American or Asian hair?

Just the extra use of straightening balms, and the use of heavy conditioners- I love A.R.S. conditioner. For Rhiana- all I really used were curling irons-actually 5 or 6 different sized barrels-all ceramic irons, though. For Solange- I blow-dried her hair and then scrunched her curls; For (newcomer) Giovonnie Samuels, her hair is all braided, so I worked with her braids and changed it up by adding colorful ribbons, and used pieces of her hair to wrap other areas of her hair up! I also pinned her braids on top of her head!! For Asian actress Cindy Chiu, well she had beautiful hair-I did a lot of braiding, but you cannot see it well on her dark hair!

4. What about styles for the male actors?

I gave Gus Carr a razor cut (using a professional cutting razor) about every week and a half to keep the length consistent throughout the film- the boys did sweat a lot, so I used a hair mud pomade by Jonathan to try to keep their hair in place.

5. Any other special hair tools or hair accessories you used to get fun, updated looks?

Yes for Latina actress Francia Almendarez, I used a three prong waving iron, at a very hot temperature, to makes "deep waves." I sprayed her straight hair upside down and then took out individual pieces and curled those with a different size barrel of a curling iron to get a kind of "wild" look! In terms of hair accessories, for the competition scenes I matched hair bows with the color of the cheerleading uniforms, and for both the fantasy and real prom scenes, I used many rhinestones and fancy hair ornaments which was fun.

6. Do ponytails & pig tails go hand in hand with cheerleading hairstyles?

Absolutely! But I wanted to give them a modern take- I created high ponytails that were in alignment with the actresses cheekbones to make their face appear more elongated! Lower ponytails, though more classic, do tend to drag the look of the face down which is not youthful. For actress Marcy Ryan, I created pigtails using a side part to make it look very fashion forward.

7. What products did you use?

Bumble & Bumble products mostly. I use their "Thicken Spray" on the roots when I do blow drys for volume. I also love the Bumble & Bumble "Prep Spray" for overall hair condition- especially for the blonde actresses. I also use T Rex Life Drops which is a pink lotion you use on hair after shampooing and you work it into the ends- it is a liquid protein for delicate or overprocessed hair; I also love the Bumble & Bumble "Straightening Balm" which I used a lot on Solange Knowles-Smith.
