El Cantante Synopsis:

It was the 1970s and a new sound was echoing through New York City like a revolution. It was hot, it was sexy…it was salsa. From a smoky club in the barrio to Madison Square Garden, one man would rise above the rest to become an icon still beloved by fans today. With his dynamic and devoted wife, Puchi (Lopez), by his side, Lavoe (Anthony) blazed a path through life that left a legacy of extraordinary music and personal destruction.

The turbulent journey of the man who ignited the high-tempo sound of salsa is at the center of EL CANTANTE. Marking their first onscreen pairing, Jennifer Lopez (Monster-in-Law, Shall We Dance) and Marc Anthony (Man on Fire, Bringing Out the Dead) star in this labor of love as the king and queen of the 1960s and 1970s salsa movement. Inspired by a true story, the film chronicles Hector Lavoe’s rise to stardom, his complex relationship with his family and the admiration of an audience deeply connected to the emotional and tumultuous lyrics of his life.

DVD Review:
El Cantante is a biopic about Puerto Rican salsa singer Hector Lavoe and his wife Puchi. Despite being at the top of his game, Lavoe struggled with drug addiction, eventually contracting HIV from sharing needles, and had his fair share of familial and relationship problems. He was a self-destructive, womanizing man who was married to a narcissistic and domineering woman.

However, director Leon Ichaso fails to differentiate Lavoe and his life from any other troubled musician.

El Cantante stars real-life couple Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, but it is clearly Lopez's movie.

The film is told from Puchi's perspective. Puchi shares her view of her husband and his influence on salsa music; however, it is impossible to get a good feel for Lavoe's artistry, inner demons and what made him tick.

El Cantante includes reenacted concerts, faux interviews with Puchi, newspaper articles and real footage from Lavoe's funeral, but Ichaso gives the audience little reason to care about the salsa legend.

Although Marc Anthony is well-qualified to portray a salsa singer, he shows a lack of both dimension and stage presence. Lopez is convincing as the abrasive and aggressive Puchi; however, her screen time is excessive and ultimately overwhelms what should be the real star of the movie - the music.
