| Synopsis: |
|
Fay Grim, a single Mom from Woodside, Queens, is afraid
her 14 year old son, Ned, will grow up to be like his
father, Henry, who has been missing for seven years. Fay's
brother Simon is serving ten years in prison for aiding
in Henry's escape from the law. In the quiet of his cell,
Simon has had time to think about the tumultuous years
of Henry's presence among them--chronicled in Hartley's
earlier film HENRY FOOL (1998). He has come to suspect
that Henry was not the man he appeared to be. His suspicions
are validated when the CIA asks Fay to travel to Paris
to retrieve Henry's property. Her mission turns into a
sprawling con-game, pitching Fay deep into a world of
international espionage.

There is rarely a task that I am assigned here at PCM that
I will leave unfinished, until now that is. This is a huge
PCM moment, folks! Fay Grim, starring Parker Posey and Jeff
Goldblum, is the culprit that triggered this incompletion.
I literally fumbled with the remote to find the STOP button
and end this film half way through the plot. I always give
movies the full benefit of the doubt and wait until the
end to begin exploring how I feel about it as a whole. However,
not this time. I just couldn't do it.
If I had to hear Posey's monotone voice for another moment,
things were going to get crazy! Not only was I unimpressed
with a storyline about some missing notebooks that would
somehow free a man (big deal), I was also bored senseless.
I know, ouch right? This film by Hal Hartley did nothing
for me; perhaps older audiences who have been fans of Posey
or Goldblum may appreciate the drawn-out thriller. Who knows?
I wouldn't waste your five dollars at Blockbuster to rent
it and my thoughts are with you if you actually spent ten
if you saw it in a movie theater.
