Rob Zombie's Halloween vision: |
|
"Splat Pack" horror filmmaker, Rob Zombie's
(The Devil's Rejects, House of 1,000 Corpses) re-imagination
of the original slasher film Halloween makes it mark as
a 2-disc Unrated Director's Cut DVD. One of the most terrifying
and iconic horror franchises, Halloween delves into the
troubled childhood of anti-hero Michael Myers and uncovers
the making of the pathologically disturbed masked killer.
Former World Champion Wrester Tyler Mane (X-Men, Troy,
The Scorpion King), a.k.a. Big Sky, gives a bone-chilling
performance as a psychotic but silent killer who escapes
from a mental institution, dons the haunting guise, wields
a kitchen knife and wreaks havoc on his hometown. Halloween
also features suspenseful and thrilling performances from
Malcolm McDowell ("Entourage," "Heroes"),
William Forsythe (The Devil's Rejects, Freedomland), Danny
Trejo (Grindhouse's Machete, Once Upon A Time In Mexico),
among others. Since being introduced to audiences in 1978
by acclaimed genre director John Carpenter the Halloween
franchise has become an institution and features one of
the most iconic villains in film history. Available in
the original theatrical version (featuring both widescreen
and full screen presentations) and an Unrated widescreen
Director's Cut with 11 extra minutes of footage too terrifying
for theaters, the Halloween DVD includes a second disc
with seventeen deleted scenes, bloopers, casting sessions
and more.
Synopsis:
The residents of Haddonfield don't know it yet... but
death is coming to their sleepy small town. Sixteen years
ago, a young boy named Michael Myers brutally killed his
stepfather, his elder sister and her boyfriend. Now, he's
escaped from the mental institution and makes his way
back to his hometown intent on continuing his murderous
rampage.

If one director could handle the remake of the classic
Halloween horror film, then that director has to be Rob
Zombie. Zombie has brought us such movies as House of
1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects, this time he turned
down the gore factor, only ever so slightly, and brings
a new telling to the story of Michael Myers.
What I enjoyed about this film, is that the audience
can finally learn the back story, as to who Michael Myers
really is and how he became a killing machine. In the
beginning you can almost feel a slight sympathy for little
Michael Myers, who was picked on and abused by his family
and peers.
That sympathy begins to fade however, when we see that
Michael is a classic anti-social personality, with a violent
and animalistic killing nature. He appears to have no
soul. Now whether or not that soul was killed during the
years of childhood abuse or was completely ingrained in
his personality from the start is still yet to be determined.
I enjoyed the fact that Zombie did not stray too far away
from the plot of the original film, but gave the audience
a look from behind Michael's eyes. We see the story unfold
from Michael's point of view, rather than his victims.
The film still leaves many unanswered questions, such
as details of Michael's life in the sanitarium, how he
became supernatural, and the token cliff-hanger ending.
All in all I do feel that Zombie, gave proper kudos to
John Carpenters 1978 vision and his re-imagination of
the story offers some new insight into what is "behind
the mask" and manages to keep audiences at the edge
of their seats with the visuals and cinematography.
