Lars and the Real Girl
About the Film:

Sometimes you find love where you'd least expect it. Just ask Lars (Academy Award-Nominee* Ryan Gosling), a sweet but quirky guy who thinks he's found the girl of his dreams in a life-sized doll named Bianca.

Lars is completely content with his artificial girlfriend, but when he develops feelings for Margo, an attractive co-worker, Lars finds himself lost in a hilariously unique love triangle, hoping to somehow discover the real meaning of true love.

Offbeat and endearing, this romantic comedy takes a fresh look at dating and relationships and dares to ask the question: What's so wrong with being happy?

Special Features:

Review:

Ryan Gosling gives a stellar performance in this comedic and heart-warming film. Gosling plays 26 year old Lars, a loner who seems to be at the edge of a mental breakdown. All of this changes when Lar's introduces his new "girlfriend" Bianca to his family and small town community, however Biana is a life-like Real Doll, not an actual person.

Lars is consumed by his delusion that Bianca is an actual girl and his loved ones go along with the story in hopes that Lars will snap back into reality. At times the plot of the film seemed a bit far-fetched, especially the scene where ambulance workers race the Real Doll to the hospital.

Had this happened in real life, I am fairly certain Lars would be the one locked up in the hospital not the Doll. However the underlying message of this film is one of love, patience, and understanding. It shows how beautifully a small community can pull together and support one of their own in a time of need.

Director Craig Gillespie has certainly put together a truly memorable film, that takes a man's relationship with a sex doll and presents it in a way that is neither crude nor pornographic, but rather touching and compassionate.
