Legend of the Black Scorpion
Blending dazzling choreography, dramatic camerawork and a Shakespeare tragedy

Hong Kong’s 2006 Academy Award entry for Best Foreign Language Film, LEGEND OF THE BLACK SCORPION stage is set in the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period of 10th Century China, featuring elaborate period costumes and sets.

Starring stunning Golden Globe® nominee Zhang Ziyi (Memoirs Of A Geisha, Rush Hour 2) and directed by Feng Xiaogang (A Sign, A World Without Thieves), LEGEND OF THE BLACK SCORPION features intricate fight scenes from Jingwu Ma (Seven Swords) and Yuen Woo-Ping (fight choreographer, Matrix and Kill Bill films). Dealing with themes of revenge and fate, the beautiful yet morose musical score of LEGEND OF THE BLACK SCORPION by Oscar® winner Tan Dun (Best Music, Original Score, 2000, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) enhances the tone of the film by combining Western classical with Chinese classical music.

Review
The Legend of the Black Scorpion starring Chinese Actress Ziyi Zhang (Hero, Memoirs of a Geisha) is a remaking of the classic Shakespearean drama Hamlet. Strangely beautiful with its strikingly detailed and unimaginably beautiful sets and landscapes this film is definitely in it a piece of art, yet the production of this film leaves a lot to be desired. Hamlet was taking as a base then transposed for the unique arts of Chinese dance and acting and singing. Unfortunately this does not translate well into the film and makes the movie drag. Yet Yuen Wo-Ping, choreographer of the Matrix and Kill Bill) still has out-down himself in this film. The Chinese dance, fight scenes, and stage craft are crafted beautifully and outside of the film's shadow are absolutely memorizing and the zenith of beauty. His choreography is truly what kept my eyes on the screen. Ziyi Zhang herself along with her costars put on decent performances, but the story and their characters brought nothing new to screen or the cinematic arts. Ziyi Zhang, especially fell flat the manipulating Empress. Her performance, though quite regal and beautiful, is extremely similar to her other roles in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hero, and Memoirs of Geisha. Her characters all have the same spirit and she has trouble getting into touch with each characters personality and her actions and behaviors become quite mechanical and bland. All in all, this movie is definitely something to see. Not for the story or its characters, but for the pure beautiful nature of the art presented within it. We all owe Yuen Wo-Ping a great deal of gratitude for always giving us such a wonderful gift.
