Trailer
One of 2007's most extraordinary documentaries was "Manda
Bala" ("Send A Bullet"), winner of the 2007
Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize Best Documentary Feature
and Excellence in Cinematography Awards, and, at this year's
Sundance Film Festival, an HDi grant award worth $100,000
from Microsoft to author "Manda Bala" in high definition
and to develop immersive interactive experiences. An official
selection at nearly a dozen international film festivals,
"Manda Bala" was just (February, 2008) nominated
for six Cinema Eye Awards; in addition to these honors, the
film also won the Special Jury Award at the 2007 Rome International
Film Festival, Special Grand Jury Award at the 2007 Britdoc
Film Festival, and the Chicago International Documentary Film
Festival's 2007 Discovering Eye Award.
"Manda Bala" explores the social and political impact
of widely divergent economic inequality. The film delves into
the corrupt politicians, kidnapping and plastic surgery industries
that have transformed segments of Brazilian society into a
nation of fear, depredation and violence. The DVD of the film
becomes available from City Lights Home Entertainment on April
8, 2008.
Directed by Jason Kohn, protégé of Oscar-winning
director Errol Morris, from its opening on a suspiciously
beautiful frog farm "Manda Bala" displays a strikingly
distinctive tone. Featuring an energetic score and articulate
interviews with kidnappers, kidnap victims and the people
who profit from them, "Manda Bala" has the look,
sound and feel of a stylized fiction film. "Brazil is
a country of extraordinary beauty and contrast, where frog
farms co-exist with bullet-proof car factories and plastic
surgeons in a web of crime and commerce," says director
Kohn. "'Manda Bala' is a film about the concentration
of wealth and political corruption told in a cinematic tradition
accessible to people regardless of their political dispositions."
