OSS 117:
Cairo - Nest of Spies |
| About
the Film: |
|
A cross between James Bond and Austin Powers, Jean Dujardin
(star of the hit French comedy "Brice de Nice")
is OSS 117 (real name: Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath,) a
French secret agent who first saw print in 1949 as author
Jean Bruce's character, and eventually appeared in 265
novels and seven movies between 1956 and 1970.
Cairo, 1955. After a fellow agent is murdered, Hubert
is ordered to take his place at the head of a poultry
firm. This is his cover while investigating Jack's death,
monitors the Suez Canal, checks up on the British and
the Soviet, burnishes France's reputation, quells a fundamentalist
rebellion and brokers peace in the Middle East…"No
problem," always replies Hubert, whose suave self-importance
is topped only by his outrageous ignorance, political
incorrectness and dumb luck.
OSS 117 appears to have a way with exotic foreign beauties
and is accompanied throughout his various adventures by
his fetching and smart Egyptian secretary, Larmina El
Akmar Betouch.

Sean
Sophisticatedly dimwitted espionage is the name of the game
in the soon to be French comedy classic OSS: 117. The genre
pays homage to classic spy movies and especially the spy's
spy, Sir Sean Connery's James Bond. The gut busting humor
pulls it off with a touch of class making jokes at situations
and spy conventions rather then settling for cheap laughs
at the expense of quirky characters.
OSS: 117 is the French equivalent of James Bond. He's dashing,
always wearing a dazzling smile. His movements are graceful
yet deadly, and like Sir Sean's Bond he is always fixing his
tie. With the exception of the look, he is utterly clueless
in the realm of espionage, which is where a lot of the humor
comes from. He gets all the ladies, but is clueless what to
do with them. And all the clues are right in front of his
face - literally. He also causes more problems for himself
then humanly possible.
His dimwittedness gets him into even more trouble because
the movie is set in Egypt. OSS: 117's bigoted attitude leads
to many funny conversations with Muslim characters. He tries
to understand the culture but is so utterly clueless that
it's hilarious. I can't say anymore or else I'll ruin some
of the film's funniest moments.
The key attribute that makes this movie a classic is that
it makes fun of the genre. The best part is when one woman
gets sexually aroused at the blowback action of OSS: 117's
Walther PPK. He also loses as suspect in a chase due to dramatically
posing after turning every corner. It's the subtle sophisticated
mockery of the genre that makes the movie funny. The humor
is in unexpected places which knocks you off your feet, but
where better to roll around in hysterics? |
