Review of 'The Deal': |
Review
By Julie
Before making the award-winning picture The Queen, director
Stephen Frears made a film in 2003 titled The Deal that
is now known as "The Prequel To The Queen". Thank
gosh he decided to make The Queen, because this movie was
so forgetful and boring. He would have never had any success
with it like he did with The Queen.
I enjoyed The Queen and thought that I'd enjoy this political
drama just as much. I was looking forward to learning
a bit more about the British political system. AND, Tony
Blair. Well, The Deal follows the true life story of Tony
Blair (Michael Sheen) and Gordon Brown (David Morrissey)
as they strike a deal. Their deal basically consisted
of Brown not standing in the 1994 Labour leadership election,
which would allow Blair to have an open run at eventually
becoming the Prime Minister of Britain.
I didn't recognize any of the actors in the film, maybe
because I am young, I don't know. I'd probably never watch
it again and found it quite hard to get through. I busied
myself with doing my dishes and folding laundry while
it was on my TV. The film didn't really make me feel invested
in any of the characters and what happened to them in
the end. Sorry, I wouldn't waste my time with this one.

In a time of political tension and optimism, The Deal
brings to DVD an honest depiction of the friendship and
rivalry between British politicians Tony Blair and Gordon
Brown. The title releases under the Miriam Collection
label from Genius Products and The Weinstein Company.
The Deal, directed by Oscar®-nominated filmmaker
Stephen Frears, explores the complexities of a long-standing
relationship between the former British Prime Minster
and his successor. From their early parliamentary days
to the key meetings following the death of party leader
John Smith, Brown was slowly eclipsed by his younger protégé
Blair with the growing belief that his popularity could
deliver a General Election victory. The film follows the
repercussions of what happened and the lasting legacy
of good and ill that stems from it.
The Deal is a BAFTA award winner for Best Drama and stars
Michael Sheen (The Queen, Blood Diamond) as Tony Blair
and David Morrissey (The Reaping) as Gordon Brown. Loosely
based on the novel The Rivals by James Naughtie, the compelling
docudrama debuted on HBO in November 2007.
