The Year My Parents
Went On Vacation
|
| About
the Film: |
|

Set in the turbulent year of 1970, this poignant and humorous
coming of age story thrusts twelve year-old Mauro (Michel
Joelsas) into a maelstrom of political and personal upheaval.
When his left-wing militant parents are forced to go underground,
Mauro is left in the care of his Jewish grandfather¹s
neighbor in Sao Paulo. Suddenly finding himself an exile
in his own country, he is forced to create an ersatz family
from the religiously diverse and colorful population of
his new neighborhood. Mauro befriends tomboyish, street
smart Hanna (Daniela Piepszyk) and develops a crush on
Irene (Liliana Castro,) a pretty waitress in a local bar
where everyone, including Mauro, an ardent soccer fan,
gathers to watch iconic star Pelé in the 1970 World
Cup championship which Mauro hopes to watch with his parents
if they return to Brazil in time.

Review by Sean
I do enjoy a good soccer film, and this one was very well
put together. The only problem as that the exact same thing
was done 5 years ago in the German film "The Miracle
of Bern," and that film was much better made.
The movie encompasses the same elements as its older German
brother. It's a coming of age story that uses soccer as
the means to grow. What this verision lacks is the turmoil
that "The Miracle" has. Mauro's parents are gone,
presenting an evident complication, but the political unrest
is missing. There isn't a distinct coming together at the
end. We don't get to see the parents in the beginning so
we don't know how the beginning is different from the end.
It lacks unity; to show growth the viewer needs a more concrete
starting point.
The other thing the story lacks is a direct link to the
world cup. It literally comes out of nowhere. One minute
soccer is absent, and the next minute we're in the middle
of the world cup. Once again a lack of unity.
Overall, a decent film, but I would suggest "The Miracle
of Bern" over this one any day.
