The Chris Farley Show: A Biography in Three Acts
Tom Farley, Jr. & Tanner Colby
Book Review:

Tom Farley, Jr. and Tanner Colby's The Chris Farley Show: A Biography in Three Acts is an oral biography of the late comedian. The book consists of memories and vignettes from people in Chris' life, including his childhood friends and fellow Saturday Night Live castmates. Together, the interviews tell a fairly complete portrait of Farley, from his birth to his tragic death.

One of the main topics in the biography is Chris' struggle with himself and his inner demons. He was pegged as a funny guy early on in his life, and it seemed as though he did not have any other identity. Drugs, food and alcohol became his escape, and perhaps unsurprisingly, his entire family grappled with the same issues.

His drug and alcohol trouble was so severe that, although he achieved his lifelong dream of being a part of 'Saturday Night Live,' he also spent a lot of time in and out of rehab facilities. Even when it seemed as though Chris has conquered sobriety, he would always suffer a setback, such as disappointments with his film career, that sent him careening back into addiction.

An interesting factoid in The Chris Farley Show is the comedian's strong religious conviction. One of his closest friends and confidantes was a priest, and Farley was a frequent attendee at church, even becoming involved in volunteer work there. Another tidbit about Chris - perhaps unsurprisingly - is that he was very self-conscious about his weight. He was often involved in skits that involved pratfalls and jokes about his size, which led Chris to say that everyone always wanted to see "Fatty fall down."

The Chris Farley Show: A Biography in Three Acts is a must for his fans - but it's also an interesting read for those who aren't as familiar with his work. Due to the nature of the oral biography, the book provides multiple viewpoints on circumstances in Chris' life and death, including the reason behind his final overdose. An obvious exclusion, for whatever reasons, was Adam Sandler, one of Chris' closest friends on Saturday Night Live. Nonetheless, The Chris Farley Show is a moving, intimate look into Chris' life, which ended much too soon.
