Kevin Kerney is back in Death Song, Michael McGarrity's eleventh novel in the acclaimed series.

After a new deputy sheriff is killed in Lincoln County, Sergeant Clayton Istee tries to contact the deputy's wife, who is living in Santa Fe. Shortly thereafter, Santa Fe police chief Kevin Kerney discover the remains of the wife, who was apparently brutally murdered. Kerney must team up with his son Istee to catch the killer. They decide to search for the murdered couple's son and, along the way, they learn of a drug trafficking scheme and discover several other murdered bodies connected to the crimes.

Kerney is determined to find the cop killer before he retires at the end of the month, leading to a fastpaced mystery with interesting characters and a surprising ending. McGarrity describes Kerney and Istee's family life and provides some background for those new to the series. Most of all, though, he brings his vast knowledge of police work to the table, as well as his stunningly real descriptions of the New Mexico landscape.

Death Song is a real change from McGarrity's other Kevin Kerney novels. Noticeably less violent than his prior work, it allows readers to focus more on the storyline and the dramatic picture McGarrity paints. Some fans may miss the violence and rigor in the series, but hopefully they'll stick around to find out what happens to Kerney as he prepares to retire and move to London with his wife and son.

Michael McGarrity is the author of eleven mysteries in his popular Kevin Kerney series. A former deputy sheriff for Santa Fe County, in 1987, he was honored as Santa Fe's Police Officer of the Year.

Also a trained psychotherapist, he specialized in high-risk populations and has served on the faculty of several college and universities.

McGarrity also published numerous journal articles before turning to writing full-time.
