Zapped

Review: |

Author Carol Higgins Clark lived in New York during
the 2003 blackout - so she decided to set her next
mystery, starring sleuthing duo Regan Reilly and
her husband, Jack Reilly, in New York during another
blackout.
This time the two have returned to their apartment
following a vacation. Suddenly a blackout hits the
city and surrounding areas, and of course mystery
and mayhem are close behind.
Regan and Jack are in the process of combining Jack's
old bachelor's pad and a next-door apartment into
their new home, so the place is a mess and they
haven't changed locks on the door. While Jack is
away checking in at work and picking up dinner,
Regan surprises a theft with a stun gun.
Multiple story arcs become intertwined, as two parties
attempt to break into the safe in the Reilly's added-on
apartment. In case that's not enough, Jack is searching
for an art thief who took advantage of the power
outage, and Regan is on the hunt for a psychotic
woman who drugs and brands blonde men.
In typical Carol Higgins Clark fashion, none of
the characters are really that evil, and those who
are have a tragic background to make up for it.
Regan and Jack are a likable duo who rely on coincidence
and luck to solve crimes just in the nick of time,
and while Higgins Clark's novels aren't always suspenseful,
they are usually entertaining.
