(Continued) Cruefest Concert Review featuring Buck Cherry, Papa Roach, Motley Crue, Trapt & SixxAM
by Kristyn Clarke

Now comes the time to starting rocking out with the big boys, as Papa Roach took the stage with one of the most energetic performances I have seen in awhile. Lead singer Jacoby Shaddix is looking better than I have seen him look in years, in fact the entire band looked and sounded hot. It has been about eight years since I have seen this band perform live and their on-stage antics have just gotten crazier, a point which Shaddix backed up by saying "I've lost my mind playing in a rock band for far too long", however he seemed to be loving every moment of their vivacious set. The band threw together a fantastic mix of their radio-friendly hits such as "Getting Away With Murder", "Scars","To Be Loved", and "Forever" and then took it "back old school" with fan favorites such as "Broken Home" and "Last Resort". They also debuted a new song "Almost Told You That I Loved You" and if the song is any indication the album is going to definitely be worth checking out.. Several times throughout their forty-five minute set Shaddix leaped off of the stage and jumped into the crowd of hungry fans, it was amazing to see him put forth that type of trust and interaction with the fans. Anyone who has ever doubted that this band doesn't have what it takes to keep plowing ahead, had better get their ears checked because Papa Roach is rocking harder than ever.

After the frenzy that was Papa Roach, it was time for Buckcherry to take the stage. While I do feel that Buckcherry put on a solid set, led by singer Josh Todd, I don't feel that they brought the same raw emotion and powerhouse performance to the stage as Papa Roach. Perhaps if the two acts were to switch time slots, it may have worked out better overall. It certainly can not go without being said that this band oozes out sexuality. Once lead singer Josh Todd ripped off his shirt, it got about ten degrees hotter in the whole venue, at least according to the females in the crowd. The band tore through their hit songs such as "Lit Up", "Crazy Bitch" and "Sorry". What is great about this band is that they have strong crossover appeal and the music is relatable to just about anyone. The band also previewed a new track from their upcoming album Black Butterfly due in stores this September called "Too Drunk To F**k", I think the crowd was feeling it, so the new album should definitely be worth checking out.

Now that the previous bands have gotten the crowd amped and near hysteria, Motley Crue is ready to take the stage and I am completely psyched. The Crue exploded onto the stage in a flurry of flashing lights and pyrotechnics. All other bands take note, this is a freaking rock show! This is how it is supposed to be done! The band opened with "Kickstart My Heart" and then continued to kick it into high gear with hits such as "Wild Side" and "Shout at the Devil". I was pleased to see that when the band launched into the title track off their new CD "Saints of Los Angeles" the lead singers from the previous four bands came out to join Crue on stage, and it was just amazing. They then continued to plow through their hits such as "Live Wire", Motherf**ker of the Year", "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away), and "Sick Love Song". I have to note that while playing "Sick Love Song" guitarist Mick Mars seemed to forget his part of the song, this went of for awhile until lead singer Vince Neil finally laughed and said "I tried to keep it going as long as I could" to which Mars responded "Sorry, I guess I am the motherf**ker of the year".

At this point they restarted the song and the rest of the performance went off without a hitch. Drummer Tommy Lee was up to his usual deviant behavior offering the crowd shots of Jagermeister and filming choice parts of the female anatomy with a hand-held camera. Singer Vince Neil was in high spirits throughout the entire set and moved around the stage with the vigor and sex appeal of someone half his age and his trademark screeching vocals were right on target. Other songs in the set included "Same Ol' Situation", Primal Scream", "Looks That Kill", "Girls, Girls, Girls" , and the ever popular "Dr. Feelgood". I think the band sounded better than they have in years, and they all seemed completely at home and comfortable with each other on stage. I suppose it was appropriate in this case that they ended their set with an encore of "Home Sweet Home". It definitely looks like Motley Crue is back and raising the bar for all acts to follow. All in all I had a fabulous time at CrueFest and I can't wait to see what will be in store for this tour in the years to come.
