The Donnas, Pat Benatar, and Blondie Concert Review

Review by Emily Costantino

If you thought Lilith Fair was the only place to go to get your fix of chick rock, then you should have been at Sands RiverPlace in Bethlehem, PA on August 7. Part of Bethlehem's 10-day Musikfest, the show featured an all-female cast of music legends Debbie Harry and Pat Benatar, opened by The Donnas. The audience was filled with fans of all ages, male and female alike, who were ready to get nostalgic and dance to old favorites performed by the ladies who embodied girl power long before the Spice Girls adopted the phrase.

The Donnas kicked off the night with a short but sweet set, filled with power chords and screeching riffs, showing that they can rock just as hard as any of their male metalhead counterparts. Songs like "Bitchin'" and "Wasted" had the crowd banging their heads, and the ladies closed with a killer performance of my own personal favorite Guitar Hero tune, "Take It Off."

Pat Benatar came out next, opened her mouth, and started belting out high notes as if she were still in her 20's. That's saying a lot, considering she released her debut album "In the Heat of the Night" 30 years ago, and hasn't really slowed down since. She had the crowd on their feet with classics such as "Love is a Battlefield" and "We Belong," and invited everyone to sing along to the ubiquitous "Hit Me With Your Best Shot." Guitarist (and husband) Neil Giraldo had some mind-blowing solos throughout the set, complementing Pat's incredible vocal range. They got the audience pumped up and ready to party on by closing with "Heartbreaker."

And the crowd was certainly raring to go by the time Blondie took the stage - with Debbie Harry decked out in Ray Bans, a flowy red number, and Converse high-tops - and opened with an explosive rendition of "Call Me." Debbie had complete control of her audience, exuding an energy that got everyone out of their seats and crowded in front of the stage, dancing and singing along to "The Tide is High" and "One Way or Another." The encore had Debbie Blondie-ing the crap out of a revved-up version of the Titanic theme, "My Heart Will Go On." Saving the best for last, they then dived into "Heart Of Glass," which the crowd greeted with riotous cheers, and then seamlessly transitioned into "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" in a tribute to the late Michael Jackson. Yeah, Debbie Harry is still probably the coolest blonde in the music business.

These ladies have still got it, and it seems like they'll keep performing as long as their fans want them to. Girl power, indeed.
