Chantal Kreviazuk

Ghost Stories - Album Review by Julie:

Chantal Kreviazuk may have a last name that I can't pronounce, but her new album, "Ghost Stories," makes me want to learn how so I can tell my friends about this CD! Her first track, "Ghosts of You," begins the album on a strong note by sounding as haunting and painful as the title describes. I had a good feeling about the CD after hearing only the first few tracks. Each song is just as fabulous and unique to the one previous on the CD.

Kreviazuk has a voice that isn't pitchy or pop singer synthesized, it's warm and natural. She doesn't try too hard to overpower the great melodies behind her that create this well rounded album. The blend of solemn ballads and cheerful rock n' roll is very balanced and Kreviazuk achieves a sparkling sound that is truly worth checking out!

Kreviazuk is comparable to noted female singers like Joni Mitchell (well, a higher-pitched version) mixed with a bit of Sarah McLachlan. She even uses some eclectic beats similar to Fiona Apple. Don't get me wrong though, Kreviazuk definitely has her own sound that's refreshing and talented in its own way.
Picking out a few songs that were superior to the others on "Ghost Stories" was tough. It's safe to stick with the beginning of the album if you're looking for some catchy tunes that will leave you humming. The middle of the album provides some mellower songs for times when you just want to kick back and relax.

My two personal favorites on the album are, "All I Can Do," and "Asylum." See, I really can't even pick one! Overall, Kreviazuk produced a rock-solid album with an exceptionally distinctive sound!
