Hockey bassist Jeremy Reynolds and vocalist Ben Grubin met while attending the University of Redlands in California. The two instantly clicked musically and formed the band Hockey. Grubin and Reynolds, who were both close to graduating, picked-up and moved to Spokane, WA in search of the band's missing pieces. Drummer Anthony Stassi and guitarist Brian White, with their keen ability to actualize the fullness of Grubin’s vision, transformed Hockey into a full band. "New York City has had an influence on us," the singer asserts. "A lot of my production influences do come from New York. But lyrically," he amends, "The place was Spokane." The collective has since moved to their current home of Portland.
