Concert Review by Sean - August 2008:

The self-ordained Riot! tour, featuring the musical styling of Paramore, Jack's Mannequin and Phantom Planet, is a wonderful smorgasbord of bands with the energy levels of undisciplined toddlers cutting loose for the masses. It's a nonstop evening of music with attitude that will get your head banging.

Phantom Planet easily steals the show. The band never misses a beat from the second they start playing. Their performance could be considered an improv-rock-opera, or just a bunch of guys that love their work. Their show moved effortlessly from one song to the next and included the occasional anecdote complete with musical accompaniment. Not only are these guys talented and know how to work a crowd, but they're hilarious.

The band really got the crowd going. Everyone was singing along to "California," and everyone had a blast when the lead singer jumped down into the crowd to start a dance party. Phantom Planet's stage show was simple. No fancy lighting or effects just rocking music that got everyone pumped.

Next up was Jack's Mannequin. They had a lighting show to reflect their new single "Dark Blue," drowning the band in an ambiance of dark blue lights and strobes. It's a bit overwhelming to look at for too long, but it has an amazing dramatic effect that accompanied the melancholic music.

Andrew McMahon, Jack's Mannequin's singer and songwriter, plays the piano with the hands of Litzt but the attitude of a heavy metal guitarist. He was incredibly into the music, dancing and playing the piano at the same time. He would jump to his feet dancing, playing the piano and singing, microphone in hand, at the same time. Eventually he could not be contained to the piano and began parading around the stage singing.

Jack's Mannequin's stage prescience seemed too restricted. They played their music expertly, but lacked expression and seemed trapped behind their instruments. McMahon's voice was a little off at first. He didn't have the full vocal sound as he does on the record and sounded like he was straining his voice, but after a while he warmed up and sounded great.

Paramore had a tremendous stage show complete with a double layered stage and enough lighting to illuminate Times Square. The lead singer was a little slow to warm up her vocals, but after the second song she sounded fine. The other musicians were well choreographed, dancing and head banging in sync throughout their set.

The stage show was high energy and got the crowd rocking, but at times the band relied too much on their stage show to get them through the evening and not enough on their music. The light show was overwhelming, blinding and rapid. The music breaks were too long, not to display virtuosity or grooving during a good jam, but simply to take up time. There was also too much crowd singing. The audience sang more of their songs chorus's than Paramore did. It got old after awhile.

Overall the concert was a great show. Each band plays something a little different, so there's something for everybody, and each are great at what they do. They all get the crowd rocking. You'll leave a tired and pumped up, wondering how time flew by so fast.
