| Brandi Carlile - The Story |
|
|
Review By discconnected
Brandi Carlile is a fresh-faced singer-song writer from
rural Ravensdale, Washington, who quietly released her
2005 debut that had critics comparing her to Patsy Cline,
Jeff Buckley, and Beth Orton. As I have said before-where
there's hype, there's fuel for the sophomore jinx.
Or not. On "The Story," Carlile teams up
with veteran roots producer T Bone Burnett, who brings
in vintage equipment and strips down her sound. The
new songs were recorded live, giving the material
a tough, uncompromising edge and a raw intimacy. Carlile
and Burnett make a perfect team: he allows her voice
room to soar in the mix while she conjures up songs
that echo of country and folk with an aggressive sound.
This album showcases Carlile's talents as a singer
and a performer, and her continued maturity as a songwriter.
Review By Kristyn
When looking for words to describe singer songwriter
Brandi
Carlile, eclectic just about sums it up. Carlile's
new disc The Story has elements of country, pop, and
good ol' rock n' roll. There is something that can
appeal to everyone's taste. The disc was written and
recorded by Carlile and her band of twin brothers
Phil and Tim Hanseroth. The disc was produced by T
Bone Burnett, who was the mastermind behind O' Brother
Where Art Thou soundtrack. The standout tracks on
this disc are the whimsical "Late Morning Lullaby"
and "Cannonball" featuring a beautiful harmony
with the Indigo Girls. Carlile is a new artist that
is sure to stay around for years to come, this her
second disc is just as strong if not stronger than
her first release. The songs are easy to relate to
and gives the listener a certain introspective feel.
Carlile's story is one that is worth remembering.
