| Christian Scott- Anthem |
|
|
Review By Sean
From album cover this could almost be mistaken for hip-hop
if you don't notice the Gillespied bent-bell trumpet
in Scott's hand. At first listen, it sounds nothing
like the lively urban hip-bob fusion the cover suggests.
The album is strangely deceptive. The first few tracks
are slow-paced and do not show much talent on Scott's
part. There is no emphasis on any particular instrument.
If Scott wasn't pictured with a trumpet you would have
no idea what he played. It gets boring and repetitive.
In the middle of the album Scott comes alive and surprises
the listener. Suddenly the pairing of trumpet and saxophone
disappears and each instrument is given its own individual
voice. From this point whenever two instruments meet
it is in full-bodied orchestration. They play off each
other in haunting harmonies
.
The energy filled urban fusion pieces have each instrument
going in a completely different direction in beautifully
gritty cacophonies. There is real expression in these
tracks, not the dulcet motions displayed earlier. You
can hear the tension in each instrument. |

Review By discconnected
Christian Scott has talent. "Anthem," the
follow up to his debut, finds Scott's distinct sound
progressing with a maturity not often found in young
musicians. While certainly a jazz album, "Anthem"
incorporates many different styles of music and amazingly
it all fits and flows together as one work.
This album was written in response to Hurricane Katrina;
it is an emotive elegy to the New Orleans that existed
prior to the summer of 2005, a powerful collection
of 12 pieces teeming with jazz, indie rock, neo-soul
and hip-hop sensibilities.
While the tunes are partially inspired by the New
Orleans native's ruminations on the havoc wreaked
by Hurricane Katrina, Scott notes that "Anthem"
also reflects the many changes he's gone through in
the past year. Scott also has an uncanny ability to
juxtapose different jazz styles, and while I'm not
even sure what that means, I always wanted to use
the word "juxtapose" in a review, and this
seemed like an opportune time.
Scott's musical style is hard to classify, but smooth
jazz fans should check this album out.
