| Cold War Kids - Robbers
and Cowards |
|
|
Review By discconnected
It's simple arithmetic: catchy music plus relevant lyrics
equals a great album. The Cold War Kids' "Robbers
And Cowards" blend elements of what used to be
alternative when alternative was alternative (say that
five times fast), more modern rock and even some power-pop
elements into what I can best describe as a quirky-rock
sound. That sounds like a knock, but I gotta tell you,
I like the album. I don't know if it's great, but it's
definitely worth listening to.
Their lyrics tell stories of the human condition.
As a lyricist, I tend to place a lot of emphasis on
the words when deciding if I like an album. These
lyrics are personal enough to have meaning to the
writer, yet universal enough to touch the listener
with the emotions they express.
The Cold War Kids are not really that new or original
- you've heard other bands like them. Bands who are
obsessed with the Strokes and determined to expand
those horizons, bands that have a fresh take on life
in suburbia or bands that deliver quirky-but-catchy
songs. These songs are pretty lean and stripped down,
but they manage to hook you with catchy choruses.
They get better the more you play them. The vocals
are powerful and the musicianship strong.
Hype is a funny thing in that it can make or break
a band. In this case, ignore the hype, give the Cold
War Kids a listen and decide for yourself.
