Review By Discconnected
When my advance copy of this disc arrived in the mail,
I could not tell what was the band name or what the
album title was . I also was a little leery, expecting
some low budget Christian brother/sister act. Don't
get me wrong - I do not mean to offend fans of Christian
music, but the message in the lyric is usually a lot
less subtle than I care for.
When I finally listened to the album, most of my preconceptions
could not be further from the truth. Hymns are a roots-rock
band from New York who have developed an intriguing
sound that is a union of Pavement and Kings Of Leon.
The eleven tunes on the disc are compelling and diverse,
and the band meanders from alternative-pop to something
resembling southern rock, with simple arrangements that
do not get in the way of the song.
The lyrics are somewhat obscure, but the singer's sad,
low key delivery is compelling. This album was a pleasant
surprise-don't let the name fool you. |
