| Marillion - Somewhere Else
|
|
|
Review By discconnected
With a career that spans three decades, fourteen albums
and two lead vocalists, Marillion have not been easy
to categorize. They do not follow a format from album
to album, they tend to get together and play music and
see what happens.
What happened this time is the band's latest, "Somewhere
Else," which is not the album that many fans
were expecting, a continuation of 2004's "Marbles."
Many of the songs do not jump at you with the immediacy
of the tracks on the last album, and on many levels,
Somewhere Else disappoints on first listen. But all
that means is you've got to listen to it again (and
again) to give the music time to register. Steve Rothery's
guitars weave the backdrop and Steve Hogarth's seductive
voice imparts a haunting energy to the material.
The way Marillion go about the business of making
their music and the way they service their audience
is totally unique. With virtually no radio play or
media exposure of any kind, they have managed to sustain
a huge fan base, sell respectable numbers of every
album they release and continue to attract fans who
weren't born when they started out. It may not be
a sequel to "Marbles," but this album has
an identity all its' own, and it gets clearer with
each revolution.
