| Mickey Hart - At The Edge |
|
|
Review By Sean
This album really left me in awe. Not because it was
filled with breathtaking genius, but I had never heard
something like this classified as music. This album
would much better be classified as relaxing ambient
noise.
There are random collaborations from drums and flutes.
There are no attributes that makes for any distinctions
between tracks. The album is one long steadily evolving
track by itself. Nothing ever really is constant except
for the ominous dripping water in the background that
at first sounds peaceful but eventually escalates to
the level of leaky faucet annoying. I wasn't aware this
was considered music? I always thought it was something
you listened to when you can't sleep, but then again
I'm more of an ocean waves kind of guy.

| Mickey Hart - Mickey Hart's
Mystery Box |
|
|
Review By Sean
This is Mickey Hart's closest thing to what the common
listener would call real music. There are actual melodies
and vocals that are not random shouts and hums. The
music has lyrics, and a few renowned guest appearances
like fellow Grateful Dead member Bob Weir.
Hart combines the aspects of pop music with traditional
African drumming on this album to create an interesting
new brand of music. It has chill aspects like Jimmy
Buffet, but Hart's tracks have an uplifting almost spiritual
element unique to this album.
At first your ears have to adjust to the sound. After
you've gotten over the initial culture shock, this album
is very enjoyable. It has an optimistic existential
element as it continuously moves forward positively.
Definitely something to listen to on a rainy day.

| Mickey Hart - Planet Drum |

Review By Sean
Excellent idea and excellent execution. This is the
Mickey Hart album that gives the listener traditional
drums and chants with out weirding them out. What's
the secret? Play tracks that actually move, and stay
away from psychedelic electronic additions that make
the music sound more like a roaring acid trip then music.
This music puts you right in the middle of an island
campfire feast. When you listen you can almost see people
around you dancing and signing. Behold! You are the
great god of recorded media! Suddenly your walls look
foreign as you wonder why the bamboo has transformed
into this strange solid material. But there is no need
to worry; you were just caught up in the excellent beats
of this album. It really feels like you're a part of
the celebration, and once you listen to this album you'll
never want to leave.

Review By Sean
This is the funkiest of Mickey Hart's drum series. The
music is very rhythmic. I would call it fusion-affricanus.
The drums are heavy and the accompaniments electrified.
In the traditional meets new age battle the only survivors
are funky fresh jams.
What this album shows off is that tribal drums can be
used to create melodies. The drums fulfill the roll
a traditional singer would. The vocal tracks on this
album serve more for rhythm purposes and act as backup
to the drums.
The arrangements on this album are more relevant to
today's listener. It has something for everyone from
its heavy bass to the electronic accompaniments. It's
something you can actually listen to in company and
not be embarrassed to have suggested it.
