The Jesus of Cool has come a long way from his days
as a late-seventies new wave producer and pop-hitmaker.
For those of you who remember "Cruel To Be Kind"
Nick Lowe needs no introduction. For those of you who
do not, Lowe's 30 year resume includes solo work as
well as membership in Rockpile, Brinsley Schwarz, Kippington
Lodge and Little Village, and production work for Elvis
Costello and the Pretenders.
Over the last decade or so, Lowe has developed a gentler,
almost countryfied style, while still managing to maintain
a devoted, albeit smaller fan base. Lowe still can write
a song, as is evidenced by such songs as "Long
Limbed Girl," "People Change," "The
Club," "Not Too Long Ago," and the delightfully
malicious "I Trained Her to Love Me" ("If
you think that it's depraved and I should be ashamed,
so what? / I'm only paying back womankind for all the
grief I got"). Lowe has always been able to pull
off great plays on words, but the wordplay on this one
would impress Shakespeare.
As for the music, you want blue-eyed soul? Listen to
the Lowe's trademark croon and you'll learn what those
words mean. Lowe's rootsy, grown-up soul comes alive
with a stripped-down brand of soul-soaked country-pop.
" At My Age" displays Nick's signature polish,
and the connection between country, rhythm and blues,
and rock 'n' roll.
