with Rooney's Louie Stephens
Rooney took almost four years to follow up their great
2003 debut. That's one heckuva build-up to a sophomore
jinx. However, one listen to their 2007 release "Calling
The World", laid all fears of a let-down to rest,
as 12 tunes, all gems, unfolded their great melodies,
harmonies, arrangements, and guitar riffs.
"Calling The World" is Rooney's contribution
to the power-pop body of work initiated by The Beatles
and The Beach Boys and propagated by subsequent groups
such as Badfinger, The Raspberries, Cheap Trick and
Jellyfish.
According to lead singer Robert Schwartzman (who
wrote all of the songs), Rooney was going for a sound
that would at once rock and make people dance.
This is a great power pop record, perhaps the best
of 2007 in that genre (and that's a feat considering
there was a Raspberries CD released this year). There
is no shortage of highlights here, from "Where
Did Your Heart Go Missing" (the first single)
to the catchy, pining "Should Have Been After
You." The wait was worth it-this album does not
disappoint.
