Oh boy. Where do I start? I can't completely take
a strong side regarding the new album released by
Alexa Wilkinson. Her CD, "Lullaby Appetite,"
lands in the middle of a swinging pendulum for me,
nothing remarkable yet nothing dreadful either. She's
smack in the middle. A few of the songs on the album
are ruined by tacky lyrics we've all heard before.
For instance, you've gotta understand/ that I've got
a lot of time/to sit around and think about you/.
Yeah, yeah, love hurts, we get it. Wilkinson's voice
doesn't have much depth or range, she's very soft
spoken. She bears music resemblance to singer Jewel
in many ways. She's got a few catchy melodies in her
songs, such as, "Of Graves." The album overall
isn't terrible but it's nothing too memorable. To
be quite honest, I think the problem is that she doesn't
really sound like she feels the music and lyrics she
writes. But who am I to accuse her of that? It's just
my take on the album.

On the bright side, she is certainly very cute and
has a wholesome looking image, she just needs a few
years to let that voice mature! I also liked that
you really can't decipher whether she is considered
pop or country, there is a pleasant mix of both sounds
on the album that is enjoyable.
Alexa Wilkinson delivers up "Lullaby Appetite,"
an album that cooks up a unique blend jazz, rock and
folk with some introspective and personal lyrics.
The album consists of eleven songs penned and performed
by the lady herself or with singer/songwriter Josh
Kelly.
The lyrics, rich with expression and exposing honesty
without naïveté, represent her own journey
through life and love, complete with the yearning
for acceptance and the pain from the lessons learned.
Universal themes to which everyone can relate, Alexa'
songs demonstrate an emotional maturity that is a
rarity in a debut album. These are songs about looking
towards the future, accepting the past and moving
on.
Alexa's fresh vocals flow easily through the memorable
melodies, and the rhythms are catchy, moving easily
from alt-country to folk to pop and back again. The
songwriting here is the strength, and fans of that
craft will not be disappointed with this album.
