Whether you realize it or not, you know the story of the
woman who sued McDonald's after she burned herself with
a cup of their hot coffee. It's been over 15 years, but
it's always been easy to mock, even becoming a joke of comedians
like Seinfeld and David Letterman. It's often cited as an
example of excessive and frivolous lawsuits that take advantage
of America's legal system.
This documentary, however, attempts to raise the question
as to whether this is an accurate portrayal of the facts.
Susan Saladoff, first-time filmmaker and former public interest
lawyer, uses the legal battle to investigate what's behind
America's eagerness for tort reform. It could be worth the
watch just to see if and how they'll try to defend the woman.
Maybe she never knew coffee would be hot? Stupidity, though,
may not be the wisest defense.
