Erick and Carol Uphoff
Erick and Carol Interview:
Erin: Hi Erick and Carol!

Erick/Carol: Hi how are you?

E: Good. Good. How are you? How was your day today?

Er: It was long for me, but not for my mom she got to go out.

C: Yeah. I got to go shopping!

E: Nice. How has your experience been so far?

Er: Great

C: We have been working really hard. It is a pleasure.

E: Erick, I hear they call you something funny. What is it?

Er: I don't think its funny, but they call me E-Rock.

E: How did you get that name?

Er: People called me all sorts of nicknames growing up, but E-Rock was the one that everybody liked.

E: How long have you been dancing?

Er: Since I was nine

E: Mom, have you ever danced before?

C: I got to take classes at Ericks studio, but not a lot. Through that I had a grown up part in UCLA's Nutcracker... nothing at all like we are doing now.

E: Erick, what is your favorite style of dance to perform. What is your thang?

Er: I really love hip-hop, but I'm also pretty passionate about lyrical.

E: What is your favorite to watch?

Er: I like to watch everything. It doesn't really matter. I love dance and watch it.

E: Ok. What is your favorite dance to watch Erick do?

C: I love watching him do ballet, but I also the lyrical.

E: Erick, what have you done before this to be considered a professional dancer?

Er: I have done music videos, a Mario video, and two week show for Smokey Robinson, danced with Joss Stone and Heather Headley.

E: That's really exciting. If you weren't a dancer what would you be?

Er: I am really into music editing. I do a lot of mixing. Something along those lines.

E: Like a producer?

Er: Yeah...

E: Erick, when you saw your mom what went through your mind?

Er: I was shocked. At first I didn't know what was going on and then they told us they were going to be our partner for the long haul and I was like woah!

E: How did you keep that secret, Carol?

C: It was very hard. In fact, my biggest concern was that he would think I was ignoring him or had become uninterested in him, because he reads me so well. I didn't want to talk to him a lot about the show. He would tell me about the show and we would talk about it, but I would react and try to act like I didn't know what was going on. It helped that the weeks before the reveal we weren't together. The week before in Las Vegas was a tough weekend.

Er: Yeah. I had no idea.

E: Really? Awesome. What was the expression on his face like?

C: He was like " Wow, mom! You're up here on stage with me. You look good" I don't know if the camera's got it, but he said "This is my best partner!" , because they asked who was your best and worst partner.

E: Awww. That is so sweet. Are you guys excited to watch the big reveal?

Er: It is going to be cool.

C: It is going to be fascinating to see it from that side. I think we may be in the second episode though.

E: Yeah. I think the daughters and fathers are in the first episode. What would you say is the chemistry between the dancers?

Er: The chemistry is pretty cool. Everyone is pretty chill and are just here to have fun and do the best we can. We are excited, because it's a competition, but its about fun. It is really cool.

E: Do you find that it is really hard to dance with everybody, because of the different styles or does everyone blend really well?

Er: It is cool, because everybody is very different in their background and you can definitely see it, but when we get together we can gel together as a team. I think that is awesome. I think it is going to be a good show.

E: Ok. Carol, how is the parent's chemistry?

C: It's great. We have several that like to organize dinner together and whatever. It is neat. I keep wondering if this is going to keep up once the competition starts. At this point we all feel like we won just getting here and we are enjoying each other and finding out about the interesting people.

E: Do you think having parents around has kept the competitiveness out of the show?

Er: I would definitely say that. When we met before we had no idea what we were going to be asked to do, so there was a lot of tension. Now, it is much more family. You get to see peoples true colors when their parents are there.

E: What is the worst thing about being partnered with someone who has never danced before?

Er: My mom is not new to this thing. She is working well. She has never danced the way we are dancing now and its cool to how she progresses and learns to take to it. It's a cool process.

E: What is the best thing about being partnered with your professional dancer son?

C: It is so exciting to see him in his element. He has been living in L.A. for the best two years, but this last summer was the first time I'd ever come out to see him and what the dancers do. He is a great feature. I know from where he comes from the teachers back home and its sort of like hearing their voices that he has internalized when he corrects me. The level of maturity and professionalism is great and its something I would never have seen otherwise.

E: Where are you from Carol?

C: Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

E: Alright. Here is your last question. Why should people watch and vote for you on "Your Mama Don't Dance"?

Kr: It is a novelty show and it is like nothing that has every been on T.V. before. It is cool. I talked to some other people and they heard about the show and they are really excited even before knowing that me and my mother were going to be on it. It is something new. There are a lot of dance shows out right now and this is something that hasn't been done before. And we are going to be on it so why not watch it!!

C: I think this show is going to be quality entertainment. These kids are the best of the best of dancers and I love the way that the choreographers are allowing the kids to show off what they can do. I was afraid that with us here it would get dumbed down, but with the opening number they are in they give the show a good show. We are hard working folks and we do a good job. We have a good relationships with each other and it shows how we work together.

E: Well, we look forward to seeing you! I would like to thank you so much for talking with us and we wish you all the luck.

C/Er: Thank you. Bye.
