The Top Ten Pop Music Hits of 1999
See All 75 of PCM's 1999 Top Songs Here!
1. All Star - Smash Mouth
The longevity for this song, in addition to the catchy melody and refrainn, could have been that the song was featured in the films Shrek, Rat Race, Mystery Men and Digimon: The Movie.
2. Man! I Feel Like A Woman - Shania Twain
Shania, Eilleen Regina Edwards to her friends, had the biggest selling album by a female ever with the release of Come On Over, featuring Man! I Feel Like A Woman. This crossover album was a country and pop hit, selling over 40,000,000 copies. I Feel Like A Woman has become a girls' night out anthem.
3. Mambo No. 5 - Lou Bega
Originally written and recorded by Perez Prada in 1952, Lou re-wrote some of the lyrics and updated the music for modern pop music ears. The girls mentioned in the song include: Angela, Pamela, Sandra, Rita, Monics, Erica, Tina, Mary and Jessica.
4. I Need To Know - Marc Anthony
1999 was the year of the Latino Pop Star, as you can tell by this list. The cha-cha style beat of this song crossed several generations, and any mobile DJ can tell that this song will do the job of taking that "cha-cha" request without 'offending' the younger partiers.
5. Smooth - Santana (with Rob Thomas)
This team-up, which is 1999's Grammy Song of the Year from 1999's Album of the year, Supernatural, was the song everybody heard everywhere they went in the summer of '99. It held the Billboard Hot 100 number one position for twelve weeks.
6. Livin' La Vida Loca - Ricky Martin
The former member of the original Menudo released Livin' La Vida Loca as the first single from his self-titled album. It is his signature song in the U.S., but he is probably best know world-wide for Cup of Life, which was used as the theme the 2000 Olympics.
7. Canned Heat - Jamiroquai
Better known as the Napolean Dynamite dance song, it actually only reached Billboard position # 58, with very little airplay. Canned Heat, along with Louie Armstrong's What a Wonderful World, show what the inclusion in a movie soundtrack can do for a song.
8. Believe - Cher
Cher first hit Billboard's number one spot with Sonny with the immortal I Got You Babe in July 1965. She repeated that position with Believe in 1999, which gave her the record for longest span between #1 hits. At age 52, Cher was also the oldest person ever to hold the Billboard number one position, with Believe.
The Beach Boys own the official artist record with Good Vibrations (1966) and Kokomo (1988).
9. Summergirls - LFO
"...You look like a girl from Abercrombie and Fitch..." caught the ears of a generation. Mix a bunch of subtle Pop Culture references like Alex P. Keaton, New Edition, Kevin Bacon and Footloose, New Kids On The Block, The Beastie Boys, Larry Bird, William Shakespeare, Michael J Fox and Paul Revere with soft pop, and you've created a summertime classic.
10. We Like To Party - The VengaBoys
Six Flags Amusement Parks have featured this song in commercials for years, and although it barely cracked the Billboard Top 30, it has become a party classic.
BTW - VengaBoys is pronounced BengaBoys

Why didn't Christina Aguilera make the 1999 top ten list? Christina is arguably the best musical talent to come out from 1999, but she seems to have gotten better as she's aged. Santana, Ricky, Shania and the others "peaked" this year. As talented as she is, we just haven't gotten the votes and/or suggestions to help her crack the the list for 1999.
