Trapt - Stories
Sarah McLachlan - Building a Mystery
Systematic - Leaving Only Scars
Saliva - Bleed for Me
Brand New - Play Crack the Sky

There are many Beatles sad songs that I love, despite the sorrow. Some have been mentioned already: Yes It Is, Let it Be, She's Leaving Home, Yesterday (the pinnacle of beautiful sad songs). I'd like to add:

Eleanor Rigby - picks up the rice in a church where a wedding has been, lives in a dream. Waits by the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door, who is it for? All the lonely people, where do they all come from? All the lonely people, where do they all belong? A whole song about loneliness, and Paul did it beautifully.

For No One - your day breaks, your mind aches. There will be times when all the things
she said will fill your head, you won't forget her. And in her eyes, you see nothing, no sign of love behind the tears. Cried for no one, a love that should have lasted years...

I'll Be Back - You could find better things to do than to break my heart again. This time I will try to show that I'm not trying to pretend...

I'm A Loser - well gosh the title explains it all.

Misery - another self explanatory song.

This Boy - Oh, and this boy would be happy just to love you, but oh, my, oh that boy won't be happy till he's seen you cry ....

Paul takes the cake with sad songs, he is brilliant at songwriting all around and has written amazing sad songs and amazing cheerful songs. I want to add a couple Paul solo sad songs:

Here Today - written as a tribute to John.
Somedays - from the Flaming Pie album
Little Willow - written for Ringo's first wife when she died.

Thanks and I love your site!
- Gabrielle

Burn - Usher
U Got it Bad - Usher
All by Myself - Celine Dion
Beauty and the Beast - Celine Dion
I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston
All at Once - Whitney Houston
Crazy - Aerosmith
I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing - Aerosmith
There You'll be - Faith Evans
Truly Madly Deeply - Savage Garden
He Still Loves Me - The film 'Fighting Temptations'
All Falls Down - Kanye West
End of the Road - Boys 2 Men
I Don't Wanna Know - Mario Winans
All my Life - K Ci and JoJo
Crazy - K Ci and JoJo
I'm so into You - Ashanti
The World's Greatest - R Kelly
Kissing you (Romeo and Juliet) - Sade
-JuenH
There Goes My Hero -Foo Fighters-Dave Grohl wrote this about Kurt Cobain. Immagine watching your bandmate/friend slip away like that....thats really upsetting.

Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) -Green Day-Sad because when you think about it, it's like Okay, your gonna die, but when you do, make sure that you lived your life like you wanted it, you never know when, but make sure that you lived it right

Hurt -Nine Inch Nails/Johnny Cash -I like the NIN version better, but the Johnny Cash one sounds sadder. When he sings it, you can basically feel him dying. He just sounded so old and sad. In the NIN one, you can feel Trent's pain, and i just like that.

Love Song/Cut Here/Close To Me/ -The Cure-Almost all of their songs are sad. Even their not-so-sad-songs are sad... Just Like Heaven is pretty happy, and it STILL makes me a little teary. They have a cool we-look-like-your-average-goths-but-were-cooler-than-those-assholes thing, while still being modest, going on. (I LOVE The Cure, Robert Smith's voice, when you hear it, is almost like the voice of an old friend....he is awesome, the band is awesome....)
-Cure4PixieDust80

Here's some sad songs I didnt see mentioned
The Replacements - Unsatisfied
-this one ALWAYS gets to me. It probably reminds me of my relationship
since me and my bf live in different countries and its so usnatisfying

Shawn Mullins - Sunday Morning Coming Down
-This song literally makes me suicidal (ok well not literally) but its soooo
damn sad.

and now for the worst of all...

Newlife - Christmas Shoes (dont know if i got the bands name right there or not)
This song gets me mad off to no end, they write this song for CHRISTMAS TIME and it comes on every year and at first it sounds like a happy little story about a family, and then they go on and you hear that this poor little kid broke as hell is trying to buy a beautiful pair of shoes for his mother because i want her to look beautiful when mama meets jesus tonight . The first time i heard that i started BAWLING, tghe second year i remembered it being sad but forgot what it was about and then i had to go through that all over again. The third year everyt ime i heard it i just said FORGET THIS and i would turn it off real quick. HORRIBLE it is, to make people depressed like that around christmastime. Christmas is hard enough on people as it is. Wow I did a yoda sentence back there. Well anyways, im goign to stop rambling now, use my songs if you find them useful.
Thanks for your time,
~Casey

You missed two of the most classic sad rock songs:

The Who - Behind Blues Eyes - No one knows what it's like to be hated, to be faded, to telling only lies

Kansas - Dust in the Wind - All we are is dust in the wind, everything is dust in the wind
Please add these two, because they're essential to the sad song genre!

Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisley and Allison Krauss is a heart wrenching song about a young man who leaves for World War II leaving the love of his life behind, but he promises to return safe and sound to him. Though when he returns he only finds his lady love has been cheating on him. He then turns to the bottle, he drinks and drinks. He put the bottle to his head and pulled the trigger does not mean that he or she killed themselves with gun they drank themselves to death. Then she blames herself and just cannot find the strength to get up off her knees. You really need to see the music video to get the complete affect of the song! But in my book the saddest song ever!
-gogocountrygal
Got to be Red Sovine's "Teddy Bear". Just can't listen to it without
crying...
-Eric R. S.
Patches - by Dickie Lee
Lately by Devine!!!
eagles -- desperado
i always listen to it when im sad
