Three inmates
from the asylum are up for review to be released. When the
first one comes before the board, a member of the panel
asks him, "Do you think that you're well enough to
be released?"
"Yes, I do,"
replies the inmate.
The board member then says
to him, "All right, answer this question for me. How
much is three times three?"
The inmate sinks deep into
thought, but suddenly brighten. "I know!" he exclaims.
"Three times three is Tuesday!"
The panel members look
at each other and roll their eyes as the man is ushered out
of the office and back to his room. A few minutes later, the
next inmate is brought in.
The head of the panel asks
him, "Do you think that you are now ready to leave the
institution?"
"Oh yes," answers
the inmate.
So the panel member says
to him, "Well, then, what is three times three?"
The man thinks for just
a moment, then declares triumphantly, "One hundred eighty-one!"
After he is led out, the
third inmate is brought before the board.
The panel member asks him,
"Do you feel that you are ready to cope with the outside
world?"
The inmate is very sure
of himself as he answers, "Yes, I most certainly am!"
The board member then says,
"Very good. Now tell me, what is three times three?"
Without a moment's hesitation,
the inmate replies, "Nine."
"Very good!"
exclaims the head of the review committee. "How did you
arrive at that number?"
"It was simple,"
replies the inmate. "All I had to do was subtract Tuesday
from 181."
To the world
you may be just one person, but to one person you may be the
world.
