(June
26, 2008) PCM's Erin got a chance to talk to Jamie Kaler,
an established comedian, writer, actor, and all-around funny
guy...
Jamie Kalers plays Mike Callahan on the hilarious TV show
My Boys, which did really well this year on
TBS
.
When asked if he could relate to his character at all, Jamie
explained that Mike is basically just an exaggerated version
of himself. In fact, most of the characters on My Boys are
exaggerations of the actors who play them, he said, which
make the chemistry undeniable both on and off the set.
Before doing My Boys, Jamie made appearances on numerous
TV shows and in movies, including Will & Grace, Friends,
and The Family Stone. He raved about the wonderful people
that he has been able to work with and learn from. One of
his most memorable experiences was when he got to share
scenes with Gene Wilder on Will & Grace. "I just
kept looking over and being like that's Willy Wonka,"
he said. He added that he just loved working with the cast
of The Family Stone, which featured actors such as Luke
Wilson, Diane Keaton, and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Although he loves acting, Jamie said stand-up comedy
is his passion. "You either make people laugh or
you don't; there are no second chances when you're up
on that stage," he explained. His stand-up is hilarious
and when asked what inspires his jokes, he said that instances
in his life make for perfect material, "like locking
my keys in my car" with the ignition running.
Now
that My Boys has wrapped, Jamie will switch from actor
to comedian, making an appearance on Chelsea Lately and
beginning a tour that will last into the fall. Several
stops include New York, Chicago, and Ohio State, where
he will perform with Bill Engvall, although he said he
prefers to perform in small, hole-in-the-wall type venues.
Jamie will make his appearance on Chelsea Lately Friday
night, and he said it's always fun to do the show, especially
since he and Chelsea Handler have been friends for a long
time. He added that it is so nice to see the people he
was auditioning with so many years ago, like Chelsea Handler
and Joel McHale, doing so well in their careers.
I really enjoyed my conversation with Jamie; he seemed
like a really personable guy and was very easy to talk
to. The interview was relaxed and laidback and it was
so nice to speak to someone who is so down-to-earth and
fun. Make sure to check him out on Chelsea Lately and
My Boys, or see him live on tour this summer and fall!
