(May 2009)- PCM's writer Julie Kissane recently chatted
with newcomer Jessie
James about the release of her new album, 'Wanted,'
set to hit stores on July 13th.
James was nice enough to spend some time
chatting with PopCultureMadness about her music, being featured
on one of the most popular movies this past winter, Confessions
of A Shopaholic, and much more! Around the same time
that we spoke to James, she was set to sing The National
Anthem at a Nascar event in May! Check out some Q&A
with held with the upcoming star about her career and what's
next in her future below:
Q: Can you tell
us a little about yourself? Who is Jessie James?
James: "I'm from Georgia and I've
been primed to be in the music industry my entire life.
This has always been something I've wanted to do. I'm 21
year old, I'm a young girl in a big people world. This is
the first look that people have at my look and my image
coming out now. Right now, I'm learning so much about music.
I've been doing music my entire life but this is the first
time that it's out there on the radio and people can hear
it."
Q: You've been
writing songs for a long time, someone who seems to be in
the news a lot these days is new 'American Idol' judge,
Kara DioGuardi, what was writing with her like? What is
your songwriting process like?
James: "I did write with
her, I had a few days spent with her in the studio. I get
inspired by so many different things. I look at writing
songs as a type of therapy. Some people approach it like
work. I write a lot of songs about being independent and
that's the way I want to be in my life. I think a lot of
people can relate to that."
Q: We like the
message that you are trying to portray. Self confident.
Independent. Self-empowerment. Self-sufficient women!
James: "Yeah, thanks! You don't
always need a guy. You turn the radio on and there are women
singing about guys, begging them to come back to them. Love
is great but you don't need guys all the time!"
Q: Your song was
featured on, 'The Confessions Of A Shopaholic,' soundtrack,
how cool was that for you to see your song in a movie?
James: "It was so exciting and of
course I'd love to get the opportunity to write songs for
movies or have a song from my album be featured in another
movie or TV show. It was a great surprise!"
Q: Do you consider
yourself a 'shop-a-holic?'
James: "I get really stressed out
when I'm shopping to be honest! I think my job is great
because sometimes people shop for me and I just focus on
music. I get overwhelmed!"
Q: Summer is a
huge time for music festivals and touring, what are your
plans for the coming months?
James: "We are absolutely touring!
I've got some dates lined up with David Cook and Matt Nathanson.
We have a massive band we'll be on tour with but I can't
quite say yet! So there's a lot to look out for!"
