Anjulie PCM Interview

Canadian singer-songwriter Anjulie was nice enough to answer a few questions for PCM. She was featured this summer as part of mtvU's "Freshman 5" for her music video "Boom," and just released her self-titled debut album in August. Details about the album and video can be found here!

Q. What can new listeners expect from your newly-released debut album?
A. The record is very sultry, emotional and passionate with an edge of sarcasm. Think eminem meets Sade.

Q. What are your biggest influences musically?
A. Eminem, Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliot, Sade, Janet Jackson... I love female songwriters and pop music.

Q. How has your cultural background affected you as an artist?
A. I think when you look different you can either try really hard to look like everyone else or embrace your difference. I chose the latter. I grew up in an all white suburb and didn't fit in. I spent my time in my bedroom writing songs. The only downside is I'm shy as hell.

Q. What inspires you to write?
A. I'm inspired by life. I'm very sensitive and I like to observe. If someone acts differently than they usually do Ipick up on it and analyze it and see how it affects me. All of these thoughts in my head are better off on paper or a computer screen or I'll drive myself insane, which is what happens when I don't write for a while.

Q. What instruments can you play?
A. I play guitar and a bit of keyboards. I also do pre-production in Garageband.

Q. What's the craziest experience you've had while on tour?
A. I accidentally stole Jesse Mcartney's leather jacket. It looked like mine except mine was fake. :)

Q. What have you been listening to lately?
A. Just wrote some songs on Fefe Dobsons new record, I've been bumpin it. It's hot shizzzzz.

Q. Are there any artists you'd like to work with?
A. I'd love to work w madonna. That would be like having sex with chocolate.

Q. What was the inspiration for the music video for "Boom"?
A. Adria Petty directed it and came up with the concept. At has a goth-Alice-in-Wonderland-vibe. The imagery is Salvador Dali inspired. It's really an amazing video. It was all her. I just knew I wanted it to be dark. The next video "Rain" was more collaborative. It's amazzzzing. Like sex and dark chocolates with nuts.

Q. What goals do you have as a musician?
A. I'd like to learn how to produce so I dont have to rely on anyone.
