Interview & Concert Review: Blake Lewis

(February 2009) - This past fall, some of the PCM staff had the great opportunity to go on an adventure with Blake Lewis. We were invited onto his tour bus for a one-on-one interview and then watched as fans screamed for him as he performed on stage in Philadelphia, PA. The following is what we captured from our roller coaster ride with former American Idol, Blake Lewis! (All photos copyrighted to Kristyn Clarke & Cassandra Ference of PopCultureMadness.Com. For more information on Lewis, visit his MySpace page.)

Blake Lewis was born July 21, 1981. He is most known for competing in Fox's hit show, American Idol. The singer-songwriter-beatboxer was the runner-up on the sixth season of American Idol behind winner Jordin Sparks. Post Idol, he released an album titled A.D.D. (Audio Day Dream) which mixed pop-funk-soul all into one!

"I grab from everything, I have more of an electro sound. That's where I sit. I've been listening to that type of music for a long time. It's where I see myself. Good melodies are the key to a good song, to me. I think as a vocalist, my voice goes more towards a 'Sting' direction, I love where he goes. I'm compared to him a little bit and I'm also very reggae inspired, too," said Lewis in his tour bus when asked to describe his sound.

We caught up with fans at his concert who not only had copies of the album they were hoping to get signed, but also other Lewis memorabilia like posters and stickers. Lewis posed with fans outside the venue before he took to the stage, he was no diva and he sure made the fans happy. See fans pictures below:

Despite large crowd waiting for him to hit the stage, Lewis remained calm and poised as he spoke to our interviewer, Kristyn. He was outgoing and silly as they discussed topics like touring, recording and his experience on 'American Idol.'

"I still keep in touch with people from the show. It's cool," he said. He even posed with our interviewers sunglasses in an effort to get a few laughs. The atmosphere on the tour bus was relaxed and fun. We shared a lot of laughs with Lewis and his bandmates. He was down-to-earth and enjoyable.

He told PCM that he's been listening to artists Adele, Imogen Heap, Radiohead and My Bloody Valentine to stay inspired. "On the bus, we listen to everything. I'm always hearing different people," he said.

When Lewis hit the stage, he was all buisness. He wow'ed the crowd with some upbeat songs and did a little 'beat-boxing' in between which made the crowd cheer even louder.

Check out a few pictures below of Lewis performing with his band in the intimate North Star Bar in Philadelphia. As you can see from the outfit change, Lewis had a preppy yet rock-n-roll fused fashion sense which complimented his music well. Blake and his band played for fans for approximately an hour and 1/2. A solid set list kept fans dancing and clapping along to each song.

Fans of Lewis ranged from young to old. There were more females in the crowd, for instance, young girls jumping around and taking pictures of the young singer and older women bopping their heads along to songs like, "How Many Words," and "Break Anotha."

Take a look at the great rug under Lewis on the stage which created a warm and cozy feel to the show. Blake wasn't afraid to really feel the music and get animated during his set. See him getting acquainted with the rug below, as well!
