David Mann PCM Interview

David Mann

PCM's Kristyn was able to talk with actor David Mann about the TBS show Meet The Browns and other projects that he is working on. David Mann started acting on the stage in several Tyler Perry plays including Meet The Browns. He plays the comic character of Leroy Brown.

Q: With the Meet the Browns play being so successful, what was it like to transition from stage and to screen? If there one that you prefer over the other?

David Mann: With the play you know instantly if they love it or hate it because you get instant feedback. With television you got to wait and read the blogs, read the websites and see what is happening on different websites. But for me the transition was a little difficult because I'm so animated. On the stage I can be as animated as I want to be, but on television you have to kind of tapper that down a little bit because you don't need it as much because the camera is right there in your face. For me that is the hardest part about making the transition.

Q: What should we be expecting form the second season?

DM: I have a few surprises. You will get to meet and get a more in depth story on the different characters. You get to know some different history and back stories on a lot of the characters. You know Cora has been this sweet, innocent lady this whole time, she kind of cuts loose a little bit. We find out that Cora is looking for a love interest. Will and Sasha have some issues with children, we will just say that. You find out some really funny stuff about Mr. Brown. There are a lot of good stories with the different characters.

Q: What is it like working with your wife and having her play the role of your daughter?

DM: When we are working together the chemistry is there. After 21 years of marriage you think we would have a little bit of chemistry. It's almost like we know what each others thinking. I know what she is going to say and she knows what I am going to say already. A lot of it is just spontaneous and it's just like do it. They know it on set, they will go "you guys just did that didn't you?" While I am Mr. Brown on the set she does not want me kissing or touching her or any of that. She says, "No that's nasty your playing my dad." She said, "No hanky-panky while you have all that white on your face."

Q: How are you able to relate to your character of Leroy Brown? Are there any similar character traits that you can relate to yourself?

DM: You know just high energy. I can say that I am high energy like Mr. Brown. I'm always upbeat and doing something. As far as the clothes and the dress and other crazy stuff, definitely not.

Q: How much do you enjoy those outrageous costumes that your character sports on the show?

DM: I enjoy watching other people and their reactions. Yesterday we did an episode and I didn't tell anybody, I didn't tell Mr. Perry, non of the cast, I didn't even tell my wife something that I was going to do. I only told our hair and makeup people and they were like "oh my god." I didn't do it in rehearsal, when they said action, thats when I did it. We had a guest star on yesterday, Eric Estrada, the look on his face was golden. He wanted to stay in the scene, but he hadn't seen Mr. Browns patented taupe or as Mr. Brown calls it, too flay. The look on his face was just priceless. When they said cut he said, "What is going on?"

Q: Do you have a favorite on set moment from the coming season?

DM: I guess it would be the one where Mr. Brown wanted to go to drug rehab. And you might wonder why Mr. Brown would have to go to drug rehab. He accidentally ate some muffins with something in it -- I'll just say that so I don't give too much away -- that made him have to go to drug rehab. So now he thinks he needs to go to drug rehab. Thats my favorite episode this season.

Q: What do you think it is about a show like Meet The Browns that resonates well with viewers?

DM: One thing is that it is so culturally diverse and there is somebody in this show that you can relate to. We all have that wacky uncle like Mr. Brown or a cousin or somebody like Mr. Brown that you know we love him, but we know that he is not quite right with it. We all have that Cora in the family that is sweet and like the glue that holds the family together. You have those different characters in your family.

Q: Are we going to be seeing anymore Madea appearances this season?

DM: You never know, I'll leave it at that. But knowing Tyler Perry, you know.

Q: In what ways would you like to see the character of Mr. Brown progress?

DM: There has been talk that he could have a love interest, Mr. Brown is getting a little lonely. There is somebody for everybody. Thats a tough one because with Mr. Brown I could go any way, they give me so much room I could do whatever.

Q: Is that up to Mr. Perry to decide?

DM: Yes, but they give me so much room. Thats one great thing about the show and the character. They say, "just do what you do and make it happen." There have been a couple instances where they say, "this is the scene, do it." And I'm like "what?" "Action." "Wait!" I like to work under that kind of pressure and I know it sounds a little weird, but if I need to rest a few minutes it's like okay you have to minutes to do what you have to do. And I love that.

Q: Are there any upcoming projects for you in the works?

DM: I got Tamela's new project coming out it's called The Master Plan. It is going to be released in August. That's her new CD so we are working hard on that.

Q: So you are still pursuing music?

DM: Definitely! That was our first love and how we got in the industry, Tamela and myself. Tamela is definitely the singer, the girl can sing. So I have to make sure I keep her in that. Meet The Browns is geared more towards me and her real deal is singing.

Thank you for talking with us today. We will be looking forward to all that is coming up.

DM: It was nice to talk to you. Thanks.
