Flyleaf PCM Interview

Flyleaf's Jared Hartmann gives PCM's Kristyn Clarke the lowdown on the new album Momento Mori (in stores now), the tour, and more!

For more info on Flyleaf please vist them on MySpace !

Q: What should fans be expecting with the release of Momento Mori?
Jared: Fans should expect to hear new songs for the first time in 4 years either 13 or 17 depending on which record you buy. We will be hitting the road pretty hard and we will be playing places that we have never been before.
Q: What was the writing process like for the new album? What types of situations inspire you artistically?
Jared: The writing process for this record was diffrent from the self-titled because we didn't have as much time to write it. The majority of the writing was done at Lacey's house and James' garage we had the help of our good friend Mark Lewis to help us run Pro Tools and help arrange our scattered ideas. Sometimes having a deadline is inspiration because we can't put off writing and during those times we have written great songs.
Q: Who are some of your main musical influences?
Jared: Over the past year I have been listening to alot of Arcade Fire, Slipknot, and Burden Brothers and each of those bands influence me in some ways musically.
Q: Where do you see the future of music heading and where do you see yourself in that picture?
Jared: Its hard to say everyone brings new elements to the music each time we write so it will always be changing. I see myself in Flyleaf for the long haul I guess if it ended tomorrow I would go to culinary school.
Q: How is the current tour going? Do you have any additional touring planned in support of the release?
Jared: The tour is going great we are playing smaller venues so each show is very intimate it reminds me of when we first started. We have plans for touring next year but nothing is confirmed yet so keep checking our websites for updated info.
Q: What do you all enjoy doing in your spare time?
Jared: My wife tours with me so we like to go on culinary expeditions in every city we visit. We try to find unique restuarants and on days off we might go shopping or see a movie. I am an avid PC gamer and I just kicked my World of Warcraft habit so I have been playing this game called Demigod alot.
Q: Is there any significance behind the title "Momento Mori"?
Jared: The phrase Memento Mori is latin and means remeber your death/mortality. Each song on the album reflects this theme in some way and what we want people to take away from this record is to live life to its fullest.
Q: What would be one piece of advice you would give to musicians that are looking to leave their mark in the industry?
Jared: Be yourself and be honest in everything you do.
Q: What does success mean to you?
Jared: The most rewarding part of being in Flyleaf is to hear that in someway our songs have helped people. We have scrapbooks full of fan emails, letters, and notes saying how the songs have helped them.
Q: Do you have a favorite track off the new album and why?
Jared: I think my favorite track off Momento Mori is Missing which is a song Pat wrote. Its a little quirky and poppy but I love it.
Q: What is one interesting fact or tid-bit about Flyleaf that we may not already know? Any funny habits or hobbies?
Jared: That Lacey's voice is bigger than her body. I have a habit of twisting my beard and my wife hates the sound it makes.
Q: What is your favorite aspect of playing a live show?
Jared: The energy of a live show and its really cool to hear people singing back to you.
Q: What has been your craziest fan experience?
Jared: Once we were doing a siging after we played in Dallas, Tx and one fan had waited I guess to long in line to long. He took a dump in his basketball shorts and had it running down is leg but he came and shook our hands. We all were wondering what that smell was and after he was walking away we found the source.
Q: What is next on the horizon for Flyleaf? What is the best way for fans to stay up-to-date?
Jared: We will be touring alot so check out www.flyleafmusic.com for updates also we will be on facebook, twitter, and myspace.
Q: Any final message or comments!
Jared: Thank you to all our fans for the support over the years and we hope you like Momento Mori as much as we do.
