Interview with The Fratelli's

(June 2008) - PCM's Joe spoke with Barry, the bass guitarist of the band, The Fratelli's. The alternative band hails from Glasgow, Scotland and their sound is beginning to pour into the U.S. The trio first performed in Scotland in 2005 and were later discovered and signed to a major label. The Fratelli's have since held several positions on the UK music charts and developed a large fan base around the world. Believe it or not, these guys aren't related, don't be fooled by the name! Read some excerpts from our exclusive PCM interview below and also watch their music video!

Joe: Your song, Chelsea Daggers, has been in ads and movies, that's a big thing!

Barry: Yeah, it's got a very memorable hook!

Joe: Where is the best pub in Glasgow to get a pint?

Barry: There's a bar called McChuill's in Glasgow on High St. That's the best place, I think!

Joe: Are you guys a party band, do you prefer playing in big stadiums or small pubs?

Barry: Well, it really depends on the day. And it also depends on the crowd.

Joe: How was touring with The Police?

Barry: It was interesting. It was a good experience. We got to play some big stadiums. Giant Stadium. The Police themselves were very nice. We just have a different sort of fanbase.

Joe: Is this new album softer?

Barry: Well, there's less guitar but I don't think I'd call it softer. We just didn't want to make another guitar album, ya know? We wanted to sound different, a lot of the songs on this album are piano-based.

Joe: You've been compared to The Artic Monkeys, a punk-ier version, is that a fair comparison?

Barry: I don't see it personally myself. They are talented but I don't really see the music connection. They are a good band though.

Joe: What's the reasoning for the title of Costello Music?

Barry: It's from a British movie about a rock band in the 70s and they get one last shot later on. We always said if we released an album that we'd call it, Costello Music.

Joe: How old are you guys in the band?

Barry: I'm 29, Mince is 25 and Jon is the same age as me.

Joe: What kind of influences did you have as a young man, musically?

Barry: The Who, The Clash, all the greats.

Joe: What do you do when you are not touring? What do you do when your on the bus, etc?

Barry: We watch a lot of music, we do the same things we do when we're at home, watch TV, @$#% around with guitars, jam. We always try to walk around and see a new city when we get there. We don't want to be one of those bands that pull up and get off the bus and then right back on after the show.

Joe: Any crazy fan experiences?

Barry: I have to think. Oh, well it's not really crazy in a bad way, but there was this couple from Wales that followed us everywhere in our U.K. tour and European tour. They weren't stalker like, they were just doing it for the love of the music. They came to every city with us and got drunk and had a good time. It's not crazy in a bad way. They loved the music so much, it's was nice seeing them in the front row.

Joe: Coming to the Philadelphia area any time soon?

Barry: Not this time, I'm afraid. We'll be back in the States in September. There's a lot more of the States I want to see.

Joe: What was the last movie you saw that you really enjoyed?

Barry: A movie called Jumper with Hayden Christensen.

Joe: Do you guys handle your own MySpace page?

Barry: We used to, but unfortunately now, there's just not enough time to do it now these days. We did do it and respond to as many messages as possible, but it started to get crazy. We've got good people we trust handling it now.

Joe: What kind of musical category do you think you guys fall in?

Barry: We're just rock n' roll, man! That's the best way to sum it up.

Joe: Any last words for your fans and why they should buy the new album?

Barry: You should buy the new Fratelli's album because it's really %@#$%^& good. I hope you enjoy it!
