MTV's 16 & Pregnant PCM Interview

MTV's 16 & Pregnant
PCM's interviewer Khusbu had the opportunity to interview Maci from 16 & Pregnant... On the show she had already had the baby, a boy named Bentley. She was also in the process of getting engaged with her boyfriend. Read about her struggle with being a pregnant teen and how she overcame them!

Q: So I've seen the trailer for 16 & Pregnant and there were many girls who were struggling with different aspects of their pregnancy. I know one girl was under pressure about the decision of wanting to put her baby up for adoption. What exactly was your situation?

Maci: I am engaged with my boyfriend and when we're on we are having problems. When Bentley was first born we both had some problems adjusting, It's really hard when you're young to make a relationship work, we were having some trouble putting each other before ourselves. Also I think he was having a little bit of trouble figuring out how to deal with a new born baby. So we were just kind of butting heads but it's gotten a lot better now. We've made a huge turnaround, and we're really happy now.

Q: Was getting engaged your idea or was it an idea that was brought upon you by your parents.

M: It was our idea, neither one of our parents pushed it on us. They told us it was our decision, what we wanted to do. I think before we even realized I was pregnant we had an idea that we would want to get married. So when I found out I was pregnant we just knew we were going to be getting engaged and getting married.

Q: With a lot of couples getting divorced now did it scare you to be getting married so young?

M: Um, yeah it did, but I think it would be normal to think about divorce when you're thinking about getting married, but I don't think that it's an option for us. Neither one of us come from families with divorce in them. Just the way things have been going in the past year and all the hard things we've been through, we know how to make a relationship work. I definitely think we'll be able to make it through anything now that we've been through this, so I'm not really worried about it anymore.

Q: Back to when you were actually pregnant…what was your first thought when you found out you were pregnant?

M: Um, honestly I think I was pretty shocked. I didn't cry or anything, I wasn't upset I was just shocked. I couldn't believe that it was actually going to happen to me. I couldn't believe it was me sitting there reading a pregnancy test.
Q: Did you ever consider abortion or was that not even an option?

M: I have never considered abortion or adoption. As soon as I found out I was pregnant I knew I was going to keep the baby. Nothing else even crossed my mind

Q: How did you come to the decision of letting MTV document your experience?

M: Well I thought about it and number one, I wanted to do it because I knew my situation was going to be really really hard. I wanted teens to first see that they needed to protect themselves. The best possible way would be not to have sex or using birth control or just any type of protection. I wanted them to know that they needed to do that because…as blessed as I am, it's not a situation that you want to be in when you're 16. Number 2 I wanted them to know that if they did happen to get pregnant that it would be ok. They would have plenty of options and that even though it would really hard that they could do it and it's not impossible.

Q: When you were in school did being pregnant affect your grades, sports teams, or school clubs you might have been on?

M: When I found out I was pregnant I was playing softball and volleyball at school and I had to quit playing because it obviously was a risk for my pregnancy. I was pregnant my second semester of my junior year and I was really sick at the beginning of my pregnancy. It was hard to go to school because I didn't feel good at all but it didn't affect my grades. I ended up getting all A's and B's my junior year and so it didn't affect my grades at all. But with sports and stuff I did have to quit playing them.

Q: Being a pregnant teen is hard enough. How was it having camera's there with you at all times?

M: It was fun when the cameras were there. The camera people and the producers become like a part of your life, but after the filming was done it was a huge relief. Being pregnant is such a personal experience. It was cool to have someone with you but after they left it was a relief because it was really stressful having cameras around.

Q: When they were recording were there ever moments where you regretted having cameras there?

M: I don't think I ever regretted being on the show, but there were definitely times where I just wanted them to go away, like just leave me alone for an hour. Still I never wanted to take it back

Q: Did you have to deal with any negativity from your classmates or did you have a good support system?

M: I had a really good support system and I decided from the beginning of when I got pregnant that anybody who had anything negative to say I wasn't going to involve them in my situation because I was going through with the pregnancy and that thing with my boyfriend. Anything negative anyone would have to say would be pointless to hear because it would just bring me down, I just kept anything negative away from me.Luckily I don't think there was any, and if there were I didn't hear about it.

Q: How old is your son Bentley now?

M: He is 7 ½ months.

Q: So how are you doing now with raising Bentley?

M: I wouldn't say it's gotten easier, but the older they get the more used to them you get and you can figure them out. Now that he's older it's so much fun because he can play and laugh. It's a lot less stressful now that he's older
