Matt Silverstein and Dave Jeser PCM Interview

DJ and The Fro Creators - Matt Silverstein and Dave Jeser

PCM's Rebekah got a few questions answered by Matt Silverstein and Dave Jeser, the creators of MTV's DJ and The Fro. Matt and Dave met in high school and have been working together on almost everything since then. They are currently exec producing 20 episodes of DJ and the Fro for MTV, a show about two young slacker office workers who waste their days watching internet clips.

Q: You guys got your start out in LA with "The Man Show," how did you land that job?

Matt Silverstein and Dave Jeser: Matt shot these ridiculous shorts in NYC (The Real Slow World, The Indian Coming Out of the Cupboard) while working on the Chris Rock Show and managed to get them out to Jimmy and Adam.  And they dug them.  They hired Matt on the spot and he worked on the show for season one, leaving Dave in NY to fend for himself.  Dave then followed Matt to LA for season two and they tried to get Jimmy and Adam to hire him as a writer, but Jimmy just found Dave so creepy, so they hired him as a segment producer, only because Matt begged them.

Q: I noticed that you wrote for "3rd Rock From The Sun" for a little while as it was nearing its end. When you began writing for it, were you hoping to revive it or did you just want to have the experience of writing for the show?

M.S. & D.J.: We really just needed the job.  Matt was married and trying to get his wife pregnant.  And Dave had gotten arrested in Vegas for a PCS in a hotel bathroom and needed a lawyer.  That isn't a joke, by the way.

Q: Did you guys ever get discouraged and think about giving up after having so many shows fall short of their expectations?

M.S. & D.J.: We are constantly discouraged by every failure, but we've never once thought about giving up.  Not necessarily because we are driven and have a lot of confidence in our talents, but more because we are confident we can't do anything else.  If we don't make it as comedy writers, we're f***ked.

Q:You guys seem to work together on all of your projects, did either of you ever strike out on your own? Or do you think you ever will in the future?

M.S. & D.J.: Matt once decided to fund this ridiculous side project that Dave knew was a terrible idea.  Matt learned his lesson and hasn't strayed since.

Q: How did you come up with the concept behind "DJ and The Fro"? Did you purposefully model it after "Beavis & Butthead"?

M.S. & D.J.: We came up with DJ & the Fro after a network exec asked us to pitch a show we could produce for less than $200,000 an episode.  And in the vein of Beavis & Butthead and MST3000, we knew the only way to do that was to use existing footage.  And the funniest footage out there is the insanity on the internet.  So, yes?  I guess.  Does that answer your question?

Q: Now that you are doing "DJ and The Fro," do you continuously get bombarded with web videos from everyone you come in contact with?

M.S. & D.J.: Sadly, no.  And to be honest, we've watched more internet clips than any human being is supposed to.  We've seen things that no man should see.

Q: What is one of your favorite web videos that has not made it onto the show?

M.S. & D.J.: Cobra vs. Baby is a personal favorite.  But no one in their right mind would license the footage to us because their child would be immediately taken away, if it's still alive.

Q: You guys have been friends for a long time and also work together, do you have any other similarities between yourselves and DJ and the Fro?

M.S. & D.J.: Dave's hair is as ridiculous as the Fro's.  And Matt's voice is cracking constantly.  We think he has a tumor on his esophagus.  We'll keep you posted.

Q: I read in another interview of yours that you may get rid of the web videos on "DJ and the Fro" after a while, how would you go about phasing them out?

M.S. & D.J.: Really?  We said that?  That doesn't even make sense.  The web videos are the best part of the show.  We're such jackasses.

Q: You have the "Drawn Together" movie in the works, could you ever see "DJ and The Fro" making it to the big screen?

M.S. & D.J.: We can't see DJ & the Fro making it back to the little screen.  But we'd love to do a movie.  I'm sure the plot to the Beavis & Butthead movie would be perfect for our guys.
