Interview with Molly Jenson

(April 2009) - PCM's writer Kristyn recently sat down and chatted with singer-songwriter Molly Jenson. Jenson is originally from San Diego, California but currently resides in Fullerton, CA.

We love her song, "Give It Time," and we think you will do! Check out our Q&A transcript from the interview we held with Molly. She was nice enough to tell us all about how she got started in music, her debut album and her musical influences.

Visit her MySpace page for more information about Molly and to stream some of her songs!

Q: Tell us how you first became interested in music and caught the performance bug?

A: "I started singing when I was little and have been singing my entire life. When I was 18, I bought a guitar and took lots of music lessons. It wasn't until about five years ago that I started to work on my own music and write an album!"

Q: Your debut album, "Maybe Tomorrow," was released in March, what can you share with us about the album?

A: "It's a mixture of responses in regards to relationships I've been and situations I've found myself in. I write with my guitar, pick it up and start playing around and pick up some chords. Immediately I'll then just find a melody and some lyrics and it'll all work together."

Q: Who would you list as some of your main musical influences?

A: "I really love The Cardigans, Rufus Wainwright and even Sheryl Crow."

Q: Where do you see the future of music heading and where do you see yourself in that picture?

A: "Hmm, that's a good question. Part of me feels like CD's are going to become obsolete but then also records are coming back. I hope to be involved in the future of music for a long time.

I see more songs out there these days that don't have any meaning at all and they are becoming huge. I wish people will put more thought into their songs. We'll have to see what happens, you know?

Q: A lot of your music has been featured on several television shows, what is it like to hear your music on television?

A: "You know, that's one of my biggest dreams. To have one of my songs featured on a TV show or movie. That's where I hear a lot of music that I love. I was really excited, my first song was on the remake of the show, Knight Rider. Another song was on the show, Privileged, and that was awesome, too!

Q: Just for fun - what are some of your guilty pleasures?

A: "I love 'Friends.' I don't feel guilty about that though! I've been watching all the seasons and just watched the very last episode actually! It was so sad. I love pop/hip-hop music, I love all the Disney stars right now (laughs). The Jonas Brothers, ha! I love 'High School Musical.' I'm kind of a teenager, I guess! Those are definitely a guilty pleasure.

Q: What's next on the horizon for you? What does the future hold?

A: "I'm trying to get on some tours right now! We're hoping to get on some summer tours and waiting to hear back from them, I want to be touring and on the road for the rest of the year. I want to go everywhere and I'll get to start touring all over the country."

Q: What's the first thing that comes to mind when I say the word, "pop culture."

A: "Ahh! (laughs) Zac Efron."
