SS: Hi Melissa, How are you?
M: I'm Fabulous
SS: You Sound fabulous
M: Well thank you!
SS: What's going on with you?
M: Not to much, what's going on with you…. Can you
tell me a little history behind the band?
SS: Let's see, we're 4 guys. We started in Tulsa Oklahoma.
Soon after we decided to be a band, we moved to Nashville,
Tennessee.
M: OK. How did you guys start playing together in the
first place?
SS: All of us were friends before; when we first started
Dave wasn't in the band. It was like two guitar players,
and I kind of play the acoustic guitar sometimes and sang.
And I wanted to do battle of the bands, so I asked some
of my buddies to do it with me and we ended up winning.
So we decided to play one more show, since we were like
one more show away from quitting. One of the guitar players
left and the other guitar player went into the marines.
So we needed a new one, we honestly didn't think we were
going to be a band much longer. Now Dave came in and he
sparked something new in us I guess. We got a new player,
and he is bringing a new sound to the table. So we started
playing.
M: Who would you say were some of your musical influences?
SS: I grew up listening to the Eagles, and stuff my dad
listened to all the way up to today. I listen to Coldplay,
Kanye West, and John Mayer.
M: How would you describe your own sound to a first
time listener?
SS: I would say our sound is definitely a melodic rock.
It's like rock music that you don't have to hold your
ears to. We try to take the best parts of music that's
out there and that people enjoy and just put it all into
one.
M: Ok, You have been compared to bands like U2, how
do you feel about that?
SS: (laughing) I think that is a massive comparison, that
I don't really want the pressure of living up to. We have
similar stuff in our music but they have accomplished
so much and we have accomplished, in comparison, so little.
Thank you for the compliment, we'll try to start small
and build it up.
M: I was just wondering… How old are you guys?
SS: I'm 25 and so is Jay and I think Dave and Tate are
a few years older. I'm not sure, that show's how good
of a friend I am (laughing)
M: (laughing) DO you at least know their birthdays?
SS: I think Tate just celebrated his birthday in May
and Dave's in September, I know that much. I feel like
I'm not a total failure as a friend, you figure you're
with them every day.. what more do you want from me?
M: (laughing) Just to know there ages. Can you tell
our readers a little bit about your writing process? Melody?
Lyrics? How you guys collaborate?
SS: For me I like to write just in my head. 99% of the
songs that you hear are basically written in my head.
I figure if you can't remember it after just hearing it
in your head then it probably wasn't that good of a song
anyway. I hold myself to the standard that if I can't
remember it after a day or two then it wasn't that good
in the first place.
M: That's interesting.. Life Left to go will be in
stores next week… are you guys excited?
SS: Yes very excited, we've just been going, going, going
and we haven't had a ton of time to think. So I wouldn't
say that anyone's over the top about anything but its
like wow our records coming out. We're excited.
M: Have you had any feedback from the album so far?
SS: The people who have heard it, it seems like we've
done something alright. We've had a good reaction and
ya know I would hope so. We've put a lot into that record.
We didn't quickly throw together a record that has two
songs you play on the radio and everything else is crap.
I think your going to like the record from the 1st song
to the 12th.
M: Cool! So I see that you have been on the road for
quite a bit. How has that been?
SS: Great! It's tiring but it's great. You meet so many
new people, you're in a new city every day so it's a lot
of fun.
M: Do you have any crazy stories from the road?
SS: There's been a ton of stories, probably too many to
go through. I think for the most part, with the schedule
we've had, we're probably relatively boring. We have been
going all day, until we go to sleep. Wake up the next
morning and go all day. We were on tour, it was our last
night and we decided to go outside after all the shows
were over and kick the soccer ball around. And one of
the guys from the show came out with w bottle of vodka
and asked if we wanted to do shots. Forget the shots,
I'll pour all that vodka on the soccer ball and light
it on fire. And we did and had a two foot flame flying
around. Push came to shove and it was my turn to try to
head the ball and lit my whole head on fire.
M: WOW.. Are you ok?
SS: It was all caught on video tape and will be on YouTube
soon. WE had one moment of insanity that we can remember
and It was a more about working then playing but we had
some fun times.
M: What's your favorite track to play live?
SS: My favorite to play live is Apology is a very interactive
song. Its a lot of fun to play and see the audience react
to, and you can sing along pretty easily too.
M: How does playing live compare to playing in the
studio for you?
SS: I think when you first get into the studio you just
love it but 6 monthes later you want to play live, and
then six months later you want to record again. Recording
is awesome because it allows so much creativity, and live
is awesome because you have the crowd that you don't have
anywhere else. And playing for people is obviously the
reason we do it. It's so much fun to play.
M: How do you feel about MySpace being a way to connect
with fans?
SS: Brilliant.
M: Do you maintain your own page?
SS: yes its MySpace.com/safetysuit Myspace is perfect
you can reach people everywhere.. its very cool to see
how myspace and the internet can really help you.
M: Do you try to keep involved with your fans through
myspace?
SS: Yes everything is done by the band. We don't have
anyone running our Myspace for us. And we want to keep
it that way for as long humanly possible.
M: Have you had any crazy or cool band experiences
yet?
SS: We don't call them fans we call them friends we're
just building a big family. It's great to have people
come out and want to see us play our music. The people
who come out to see our shows are the people who allow
us to play music for a living so we like to refer to them
as friends. M: What are your favorite bands out there
now?
SS: Coldplay - the record they just put out is ridiculously
good. I think John Mayer has one of the best albums to
come out in 10 years…he totally got screwed by not winning
the Grammy.
M: Your home base is Nashville since you relocated,
how do you feel about the music scene in Nashville compared
to other cities here?
SS: I can't really speak for the rest of America, but
The music scene in Nashville is great, it's got a lot
of community, the bands really support each other, there's
a good sense of competition. You always want to have one
up on each other. You want to play hard but you want to
support them at the same time. They're all pushing because
they want there name to be recognized. There's a lot of
talent, all they way across the board. I'm happy to be
a part of the scene. Where are you based?
M: We're based in Wilmington, Delaware. Have you ever
been to Delaware before?
SS: Yes. I'm from Jersey so I've been there plenty of
times.
M: That's awesome! So how's the chemistry with the
band? I know you guys have been friends for quite some
time…
SS: Haha yeah, I hate everyone in the band. I'm just kidding
they're all my best friends; you can't get better then
that. They are incredible guys and we get along really
well. We really lucked out there. A lot of other bands
are really great band but they don't get along so great,
so the fact that we are all able to be friends is really
cool.
M: Cool… where do you see the future of music heading
and where do you see Safety Suit in that picture?
SS: I think good music will continue to prevail; I don't
think that will ever change. A good song is a good song.
That's one thing that doesn't change. I mean everything
cycles out, rock will be big, and then hip hop will be
big, and then country will be big. It definitely changes
a lot but I think there are a lot of people who are trying
to make it so that everyone wins and hopefully that's
what they do. The industry will figure out a way for everyone
to enjoy what people are making. There are a lot of things
that need to be worked on in this industry. As for us,
we'll be here for the long haul; we've got a good fan
base and a good foundation for the actual band so you're
not going to hear stories about us getting into fights
and breaking up.
M: So what's coming up in the future?
SS: Let's see… at least two more months of radio promotions.
We have tours coming up at the end of the summer, festivals,
we're releasing a record. We just finished our first video.
We just have a lot going on, trying to get the music out
there the quickest way possible.
M: So what do like to do in your free time?
SS: Golf, I love golf.
M: Have you ever considered a profession other then
music?
SS: Well I'm sure if we didn't have this something would
come up.
M: Have you had any other jobs?
SS: I worked on a golf course. I actually graduated with
a degree in marketing and advertising. But I've always
been involved in music.
M: Can you tell our readers one interesting fact about
you?
SS: We're pretty chill
M: Do have any final comments for our readers?
SS: We want everyone to know we work hard to put on the
best show.
M: Alright it's been great talking with you!
SS: You're a pleasure to talk to!
M: We wish you the best of luck in the future!
SS: Thanks so much.
